Davion Mitchell’s Auburn Roots: The Beginning of a Star’s Ascent

Mitchell’s journey to stardom began at Auburn University, where he arrived as a four-star recruit following a decorated high school career at Liberty County in Georgia. There, he guided his team to a state championship and earned recognition as the Savannah Morning News Player of the Year.

In his lone season at Auburn during 2017–18, Mitchell served as Jared Harper’s backup point guard. Over 34 appearances, he averaged 3.7 points, 1.9 assists, and 17.1 minutes per game. Though his stats were modest, Mitchell displayed early glimpses of defensive intensity and unselfish play.

Competing in the SEC helped him grasp the expectations of high-major basketball, learn from seasoned teammates, and develop the foundation of the defensive identity that would come to define his career.

After last season, Mitchell made a decision that transformed his career: He went to Baylor. The NCAA transfer laws dictated that he sit out the 2018–19 season. During the redshirt year, he changed his game by watching and analyzing the games of professional NBA players such as Kyle Lowry and Jalen Brunson and working on his shooting and defensive mechanics.

During the 2019-20 academic year, Mitchell was the principal player on a Baylor team that ranked first. His best match occurred on December 18, 2019, when he contributed 19 points, provided four assists, and made four steals in a victory of 91–63 over UT Martin that season.

In addition, he was recognized as the best Big 12 Newcomer for his average of 9.9 points and 3.8 assists per game. Mitchell was named Third Team All-Big 12 and was a member of the All-Defensive and All-Newcomer teams.

He earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Big 12 honors before declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft.
