In a surprise move, Darius Adams has backed out of his commitment to UConn. He’s a five-star combo guard and McDonald’s All-American from La Lumiere School in Indiana.
He initially picked UConn over schools like Michigan State, Tennessee, and Alabama. But with UConn’s backcourt getting crowded thanks to transfers and recruits, Adams decided to look elsewhere for a spot where he can immediately make an impact.

Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State was in Adams’ final list during his first recruitment, and they’re still very much in the running. Coach Tom Izzo knows about developing guards, and Adams’ skills would fit nicely in their system.
Some players have left their backcourt recently, so Adams could get plenty of playing time there. Izzo’s big on defense and discipline, which could help Adams take his game to the next level.
Tennessee Volunteers
With Rick Barnes at the helm, the Vols were also high on Adams’ list. Tennessee plays a fast-paced style and needs dynamic guards, making it a pretty attractive option.
Adams can score from anywhere on the court and set up plays for teammates – exactly what Tennessee could use. Barnes has a good track record of getting players NBA-ready, which has to be appealing to Adams.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama’s run-and-gun, three-point-heavy offense under Nate Oats might be perfect for Adams. He’s got the shooting chops and quickness to thrive in their system. Playing for Alabama would also mean facing top competition regularly. Coach Oats thinks outside the box with his strategies, which could give Adams a unique perspective on the game.
NC State Wolfpack
Kevin Keatts at NC State runs a pretty guard-friendly system, with lots of ball screens and fast play–right up Adams’ alley. The Wolfpack have been recruiting hard lately, showing they’re serious about building a competitive team.
Adams could be a centerpiece there, strengthening their backcourt and finding a place where he can lead and develop.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Given that Adams is from New Jersey and his sister Destiny played at Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights also make a lot of sense. Coach Steve Pikiell emphasizes defense and teamwork, which would complement Adams’ style of play. Being closer to home might also give him that support system that helps both on and off the court.
Step back from UConn of Adams has opened the doors for him and these basketball programs. He provides the team’s versatility, strong scoring abilities, and great defense.

He is in the process of making his decision, and at the same time, he’s hoping to be able to play right away. He wants a coach who has a system that fits his style and a good one to help him train. The team that signs him will get a player who is unstoppable and completely ready to make an impact at once.
