“Trying To Fit In Before I Stand Out”: Dan Hurley’s SEC Transfer Portal Recruit Sends Clear Message On Leading Huskies

Dan Hurley has made some interesting moves this year to strengthen the UConn roster. One of the major additions to the program has been Silas Demary Jr., a former Bulldogs guard. Demary Jr. joined the Huskies in April this year.

As one of the most experienced players on the team, there are a lot of expectations from Demary Jr. After the second summer session practice, the 21-year-old talked to the media at the practice facility.

When asked if he has found his voice in the new setup, Demary Jr. said:

“I’m still learning, to certain guys, like, you can’t turn up on each and every guy the same way. So, being able to have a healthy dialogue, but still knowing that I want to push you to be your best.” (5:43)

Demary Jr. believes that it’s still in the initial stage, but he is taking steps in the right direction in order to have fruitful communication with his teammates on the floor. There’s still a lot of scope for growth, but for now, Demary Jr. is happy with the progress he has made.

“I feel like it’s moving in the right direction as I continue to learn and grow and figure out my way to lead, obviously, ‘cause this is my first year. So, I’m trying to fit in before I stand out.”

Being a leader is not about just passing out comments and criticizing players. As someone who is new to the program, it’s important for Silas Demary Jr. to understand everyone’s strengths and way of communication.

Once he has figured out that aspect, he can strive to be a better leader for his teammates. With a hectic season coming up, being clear on these basics will take the UConn Huskies a long way.

Silas Demary Jr. believes he was made for Dan Hurley’s UConn program

Silas Demary Jr. was at Georgia from 2023-2025. He made the SEC All-Freshman Team, averaged 9.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists his freshman year. He averaged 13.5 points per game, shooting nearly 40% from the field in his sophomore year.

The Bulldogs lost to Gonzaga in the first round. That made Demary Jr. enter the transfer portal and look for better options. When asked if he feels like he was made for the UConn program, he felt confident saying yes.

“I definitely feel like it,” Demary Jr. said. “Looking at coach Hurley, he’s a competitor, a winner, and all he wants to do is win. I feel like at this level, that’s all I wanted to do. In the past, I’ve had ups and downs of not being able to win.”

Demary Jr. said he really wants to show that he can make a real impact on the game. Now, with Dan Hurley’s program, he feels like he can finally realize his dream.
