“I Should Work Myself Close to Death”: $20 Million Worth Dan Hurley Hints Towards His Retirement Plan

Dan Hurley is one of the finest basketball minds in college basketball. He joined UConn as head coach in 2018 and elevated the program over the years. In six years of his tenure until now, Hurley has brought intensity, passion and winning mentality to UConn. The Huskies won back to back NCAA titles in 2023 and 2024.

Coming from a basketball family, $20 million worth Dan Hurley (as per Celebrity Net Worth) has kept his career over everything else. He often admits how he has sometimes neglected his personal life for his basketball career over the years.

In a recent appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show,” Dan Hurley hinted towards how and when he wants to end his coaching career. Patrick asked UConn head coach whether he is “built” to coach for another 10 years. Hurley replied:

“I think that sometimes I’ll say I’m going to coach till I’m 60. Or I’m going to coach, you know, just my 59th year. I mean, I would like to enjoy a part of my life where I have some vitality, some health because I love my wife. I want my wife and my family to experience life outside of basketball. Where you could travel and be more of a civilian, live a more normal life, have a a normal Christmas holiday and a New Year’s. I’m feel like I’m always playing on New Year’s or New Year’s Eve and I feel like I always got a pit in my stomach on Christmas Eve or what have you.” (10:37)

Dan Hurley also explained an opposing view on his retirement plans. He said:

“But then the other aspect of it for me is like when you’re in the sports world, whether you’re a player or you’re a coach and you’re making the type of money that we’re making, you know, I just feel like you have an obligation to literally push yourself to the point of burnout for the seven or eight million dollars a year that they pay me to coach UConn. I should work myself close to death for that to make that type of living to be a basketball coach. Or if you’re an NBA player or an NFL player making 20, 30, 40 million a year. (11:24)

“The last thing you should be thinking about is longevity. What you should be thinking about, for the way I look at it, is pushing yourself to the absolute max until burnout hits and then you obviously at that point then you could retire.”

    Dan Hurley’s contract at UConn

The Huskies fully trust an Hurley with their future. After the back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024, UConn had a rather disappointing season in 2025. Huskies had a record of 24-11 in the regular season but fell out of March Madness in the first round. Despite defending champions’ early exit, Hurley’s future with the Huskies is secured as of now.
