“Not This Super Duper Cooper Flagg, Zion Williamson Athlete”: Analyst Dishes Out Reality Check for Cameron Boozer

Duke has been known for producing and nurturing exceptional talent over the years. Former coach Mike Krzyzewski developed one of the strongest basketball programs in the history of college athletics, and the responsibility of taking that forward was given to Jon Scheyer three years ago. The most recent promising product of Duke is Cooper Flagg, and they already have another one in his freshman year this season, Cameron Boozer.

Boozer has entered his college career with a bang. Carlos Boozer’s sons, Cameron and Cayden, committed to Duke earlier this year. There was a lot of hype around Cameron’s game, and he has lived up to it.

Many are considering Cameron to be the best player in college basketball. However, former Clemson guard and analyst Terrence Oglesby is not entirely convinced.

“I would disagree a little bit. He’s not the biggest athlete, like the highest jumping guy. So he does have to sit on top of your shoulders a little bit, and he’s learning how to do that, and he’s definitely learned how to do it last game against Arkansas. He was fantastic, but whenever I watched the first two, three games of the season, especially against Texas, it was like they were bodying him up. He would be shoulder-to-shoulder with the defense, and it would limit his burst just enough for the help side to come over there and bother him,” he said on the “Shooters Shoot” podcast.

“He’s still a really good floor athlete, and he’s so physically strong that, like now, he’s figuring out. He requires just a little bit more leverage. Does that make sense? He needs angles. He’s not an above-the-rim guy. He needs angles. He’s not this super duper Cooper Flagg Zion William athlete. Obviously, he’s a good athlete. He’s not a great athlete, but he’s so good with angles that he’s already adjusted,” Oglesby added.

Oglesby applauded Cameron Boozer’s form. He agreed with fellow experts that it would not surprise him if Boozer ends up leading in most double-doubles. He heaped praise on Boozer’s combination of strength and skill, calling him a good enough athlete. However, that wasn’t enough for the analyst to label the 18-year-old ‘the best player’ in college basketball.

Cameron Boozer’s Freshman Season So Far

Duke is currently unbeaten with eight wins in a row. They lead the ACC, with Cameron leading the team in all aspects. He is averaging 22.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists, which is the highest from the Duke roster right now.

Boozer also stands sixth in the list of most points per game. He has well and truly led the charge for Jon Scheyer’s Duke. After Cooper Flagg’s high-quality college season and first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Cameron seems like someone who can repeat those heroics for Duke this season. But can he lead them to a national championship, which Flagg couldn’t?
