Could the NCAA Survive Without the Power 4? Reddit Sparks Heated Super League Speculation

College sports stand at a crossroads, with whispers of a groundbreaking shift growing louder by the day.

A recent Reddit thread in the College Basketball subreddit has fanned the flames of speculation: Could the Power 4 conferences, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, and Southeastern Conference (SEC), ditch the NCAA to forge their own path?

The post points to allegations against the SEC commissioner and ties the idea to the flood of money from Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. The discussion has struck a nerve, racking up many comments, as fans debate the feasibility and fallout of a potential “Super League.”

Financial Backbone: How Power 4 Fuels NCAA Revenue Streams

The NCAA’s revenue relies heavily on the Power 4 conferences, which dominate its biggest money-makers. Take the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, known as March Madness. In 2019, the organization pulled in $1.16 billion in total revenue, with $867.5 million, roughly 75%, coming from the tournament’s media rights, per NCAA financial reports.

While teams from smaller conferences often steal the spotlight with Cinderella runs, Power 4 schools like Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas drive consistent viewership and prestige. Beyond basketball, football delivers another hefty paycheck.

The College Football Playoff (CFP), almost exclusively featuring Power 4 teams, distributed $470 million to those conferences in 2023, dwarfing the $90 million handed to the Group of 5, according to ESPN data. Media deals amplify this gap further.

The Big Ten’s contract exceeds $1 billion annually, and the SEC’s ESPN deal clocks in at $300 million per year. Without the Power 4, the NCAA would lose the bulk of its revenue, leaving a gaping hole in its budget and threatening support for smaller programs.

Autonomy and Control: Power 4’s Push for Greater Independence

For years, the Power 4 conferences have flexed their muscle within the NCAA, seeking more say over their destiny. In 2014, the NCAA granted them autonomy to craft rules on issues like recruiting and athlete compensation, leading to perks such as cost-of-attendance stipends and better medical coverage.

Yet, the appetite for control has only grown.

The May 2024 House v. NCAA settlement, which mandates $2.7 billion in damages over a decade and allows schools to share up to $20 million annually with athletes, has stirred the pot. Smaller conferences balk at footing part of the bill, while Power 4 leaders like SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey have hinted at bolder moves.

Sankey, during 2021’s conference realignment buzz, suggested the SEC might explore options if the NCAA doesn’t evolve, per The Athletic.

Fan discussions on platforms like Reddit reflect this tension, with a user noting, “Anyone NOT in the big league … The NCAA gets like 90% of their money from the March Madness contract. I have a hard time seeing any of this happening however, I think the big schools like being the NCAA.”

This sentiment underscores the financial dependency on the NCAA’s structure, even as Power 4 schools push for more control.

Feasibility of Split: Challenges Facing Power 4 Conferences

Dreaming of a Power 4 exodus is one thing, but pulling, let’s say, it off is another. Governance tops the list of hurdles. The NCAA currently handles eligibility, rules, and enforcement, which are tasks the Power 4 would need to replicate from scratch.

Setting up a new body, perhaps akin to the NFL’s structure, would demand cash and coordination. Media deals pose another puzzle. The CFP’s $7.3 billion, 12-year ESPN contract is a goldmine, but a new league must renegotiate from square one.

Legal risks loom, too, as smaller schools or conferences left behind might sue, tying up the split in court.

Then there’s the Power 4’s own diversity. The SEC and Big Ten are powerhouses, but the Pac-12’s recent losses, such as USC and UCLA bolting for the Big Ten, show cracks in unity.

Reddit user highlighted this challenge, stating, “It’s basically a Power 2 now with the SEC and the Big 10, and it’s football that’s calling the shots. Best thing is to let those two form their own football-only league, probably picking up Clemson, Miami, and Florida State, and some three from the Big XII.”

Aligning these groups for a clean break would test their resolve in ways the NCAA’s structure has long masked.
