Coach K stepped away from coaching in 2022. After 48 years of coaching at Indiana, Army and Duke, Coach K passed the mantle to his assistant Jon Scheyer to lead the Blue Devils. Mike Krzyzewski spent 42 glorious years at Duke.
Coach K has always had a close bond with the Hurley family. Coach K recently talked about his friendship with Dan Hurley in conversation with Jon Rothstein. Dan Hurley is one of the most elite coaches in college basketball right now.
In his 7 year career at UConn, Hurley has led the Huskies to 2 back to back championships. Coach K also reflected on his UConn career and how he has carried what Jim Calhoun had built.
“I keep up a really good communication with the Hurley family, the parents obviously Bobby, but Danny, too. I mean, when Danny and Bobby got together at Wagner. I mean, Danny and I are good friends. I mean, even, you know, when he was at Rhode Island, I mentioned to him, I said, “nothing against Rhode Island, but you’re ready for something bigger.” And since he’s been at Connecticut, we stayed, we’re not talking every month, but we talked a couple times during the year. And Danny’s a good friend,” Coach K talked about bond with the Hurley family and Dan Hurley at 11:25.
“Obviously, he’s done a magnificent job there and maintained the high level that Jim Calhoun built. Uh, yeah, Jim really was one of the great coaches, but maybe the best architect in building a program, as good as anybody. And uh to see that continue is really good for the game just like our program continuing,” Coach K commended Hurley for taking Jim Calhoun’s UConn forward.
Jim Calhoun’s UConn Huskies
Coach Calhoun is best known for his 26 years tenure with the UConn Huskies. He has an outstanding coaching record of 920-397. Calhoun won 3 national championships with UConn in 1999, 2004 and 2011.
Calhoun developed the winning mentality in Connecticut. He led some brilliant players in his time. It is fair to say, he very much built the foundation for Dan Hurley’s UConn to be as good as they are right now.
