“He Has the Body of a Man”: Coach K Shares His First Impression of Cameron Boozer at Duke

This season, Duke added former NBA player Carlos Boozer‘s son and five-star recruit Cameron Boozer to their squad as a freshman. Cam is coming off as a two-time Mr. Basketball USA and Gatorade National Player of the Year award winner and has shown the promise to give Duke the boost it needs this season. Playing alongside his twin brother and fellow five-star recruit Cayden Boozer, Cam is one of those freshmen everyone has their eyes on this season.

Cam Boozer didn’t quite have the start that was expected of him to tip off this season. In the game against Texas on Nov. 4, Boozer had zero points and shot 0-for-7 at the end of the first half, with Texas leading 33-32. However, in the second half, Boozer scored 15 points and finished the game with 13 rebounds; though a slow start, but a steady one. Duke eventually won 75-60.

Veteran Blue Devils coach Michael Krzyzewski, aka Coach K, recently joined CBS Sports‘ “Inside College Basketball” show and spoke about his first impression of the young freshman. Fairly enough, the five-time national championship-winning coach saw the potential and value Boozer could offer to the Blue Devils.

“Cam is our best player. He is way ahead of his age and you know he has the body of a man. As big as he is, he has great feet, not good feet. He understands the game, he is really an intelligent player. But he can be a very physical player,” Coach K said (24:50).

Coach K didn’t stop there. It seems that he carefully observed Cam Boozer’s player attributes. Adding to his statement, Coach K said:

” I haven’t seen the players yet that are playing in college basketball, I’ve seen a couple. I’ve got to say, he’s got to be as unique as anyone and we will see if he is better than everyone, but he is right there. He is gonna be right there. And he rebounds like crazy. He is a double-double guy and he can really pass too, so don’t be shocked when you see that triple-double.”

Cam Boozer combines his good build, natural size, and strength to create a significant advantage both inside the post and on the perimeter. Additionally, he is also an excellent passer, particularly in transition, creating easy scoring chances. Boozer also brings in a championship pedigree, having won four state championships at Columbus High School. So, Coach K’s assessment of Boozer isn’t far off.

Texas Coach Sean Miller Praised Cameron Boozer After The Loss On Tuesday

Sean Miller’s Texas Longhorns were able to put Cam Boozer on the edge through the first half of the game on Nov. 4, but Boozer was able to bounce back in the second half, which earned him praise from the Longhorns coach during the postgame news conference.

Praising the freshman prodigy, Miller said:

“I think he’s one of the best players in the country. I’d have a hard time believing there’s a freshman that is any better…His ability to rebound is amazing. He had 12 defensive rebounds tonight. That’s really difficult in a college game at 40 minutes.”

Boozer and his twin brother Cayden have both been in the spotlight ever since they committed to Duke, the alma mater of their father. However, they carry a heavy burden of expectations that many NBA players’ children have to face. The onus lies on them to deliver a championship. As of now, Duke prepares to face the Western Carolina Catamounts for their next matchup.
