Bye Bye Rick Pitino: Here’s Why Simeon Wilcher’s Transfer Portal Switch to Texas Just Makes Sense

In this world of recruiting, things move very fast. St. John’s guard Simeon Wilcher had entered the transfer portal and narrowed down his options to seven programs earlier on Thursday. Hours later, it appears he has decided on where he wants to spend next season.

Simeon Wilcher averaged 8.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game for St John’s last season. He did that while shooting 40.7 percent from the field, 29.7 percent from three-point range, and 73.7 percent from the free-throw line. Defensively, he had 1.1 steals and 0.4 blocks per game.

    Simeon Wilcher Commits to Texas

Hours after narrowing down his list to Maryland, Ole Miss, BYU, Virginia Tech, Oregon, Texas, and Pitt, Simeon Wilcher commits to Texas. Wilcher has been a key player for the Red Storm during his time there. In two seasons, he played in 64 games, starting 27. He started 25 games and averaged 25.4 minutes per game last season.

It appears that St. John’s loss is Texas’s gain because, as strong as Rick Pitino’s roster is after this transfer window, the squad is still lacking a point guard. However, Texas needed a point guard, and they have a promising one.

Wilcher was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 132nd-ranked player overall. He has two remaining years of eligibility and gives Sean Miller and the Texas backcourt a true point guard who’ll likely slide into a starting role.

Next season’s backcourt now seems set. Returning guards Jordan Pope, Chendall Weaver, and Tramon Mark have all announced their intentions to play one more season, and Wilcher’s arrival will ensure that Mark can serve as a combo guard rather than focus on playing the point.

Since Miller was appointed head coach, he has welcomed five players into the Longhorns’ portal. St John’s, on the other hand, has to explore the transfer window and find a point guard to run its offense next season.
