Braden Smith’s Heroics Unlocks Unique Record as Purdue Impress Yet Again

The Purdue Boilermakers, led by the likes of Braden Smith, recently clinched a unique record in their 2025-26 college hoops campaign, as they registered an impressive win. On Sunday, Nov. 16, Smith and the rest of coach Matt Painter‘s Boilermakers faced coach John Groce’s Akron Zips for their fourth game of the season and their non-conference schedule on their home court, the Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana.

In the game, as reported by statistician Brett Douglas on X/Twitter, Smith and the Boilermakers notched up a record that is just the third occurrence since the 1970s. Smith, forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, and center Oscar Cluff all tallied double-doubles during the contest, which is the first time it happened for Purdue since December 2022, and just the third since 1977.

Ultimately, Smith finished with 16 points, three rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals in 27 minutes of action. On the other hand, Kaufman-Renn dropped 17 points on an efficient 7-for-10 overall clip, 15 rebounds, one assist, a steal, and a block in the same amount of minutes logged as Smith. For Cluff, he tallied 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 14 boards, and one assist in 21 minutes of playing time.

With their historic three-way performance, the Boilermakers went on to defeat the Zips on their home court by an astounding 18 points, 97-79. It seems as though they were able to use the momentum they gained from their last win, which was against their first nationally-ranked opponent, coach Nate Oats’ Alabama Crimson Tide, where they won the nail-biting affair by seven points, 87-80.
