The Iowa Hawkeyes, now coached by Ben McCollum, have landed their first major recruitment of the current college basketball offseason. On Saturday, July 5, Joe Tipton of On3 reports that a four-star recruit out of the high school class of 2026, Trey Thompson, has reclassified to the class of 2025 and has committed to play for the Hawkeyes in the 2025-26 campaign.
This development comes after Thompson has just wrapped up his supposed junior year of high school hoops at Greeneville High School. Thompson now selects coach McCollum’s program as his team for the next stage of his career after he garnered offers from the likes of the Tennessee Volunteers, the Purdue Boilermakers, the Clemson Tigers and the Vanderbilt Commodores.
“NEWS: 4 ⭐ ️Trey Thompson has committed to Iowa and will reclassify to 2025, joining the Hawkeyes for the upcoming season, he tells @Rivals. The 6-8 forward and top-60 recruit chose Iowa over Tennessee, Purdue, Vanderbilt, others,” @TiptonEdits on X captioned.

Thompson will now be joining the Hawkeyes right after the squad finished the 2024-25 campaign with an overall record of 17-16 (7-13, Big 12) and did not make it to this year’s March Madness. With Thompson’s abilities as a stretch forward, Iowa looks to crack the national stage next year.
Trey Thompson Shares That The Commitment To The Iowa Hawkeyes This Year Was A Win-Now Move
In the report by Joe Tipton of On3 regarding Trey Thompson’s commitment to play for the 2025-26 Iowa Hawkeyes, the young swingman was asked to discuss his decision to commit already to the team to play college basketball. Thompson admitted that this was a move to give him a chance to be a better basketball player already, and possibly be in a winning culture.
“I chose Iowa because there was a need for me now. I wanted a significant role and I wanted to get better this year. They gave me both of those, so I decided to say yes,” Thompson shared.
Speaking on his decision to reclass to the high school class of 2025, instead of his original 2026 distinction, Thompson reasoned that it’s purely because of his desire to become a better player immediately.
“I wanted to reclass up to get better this year. I want to be the best basketball player I can possibly be and going to coach McCollum and doing this now is the best way for that,” he explained.
Thompson is heading into Ben McCollum’s Hawkeyes as a four-star recruit nationally ranked as the 59th-best prospect in the high school class of 2025 per 247Sports.
