Basketball Analyst Says Will Wade’s ‘Strong Offer’ Makes NC State Front-Runner for Mackenzie Mgbako & Derrion Reid

Will Wade replaced Kevin Keatts as NC State head coach in March 2025, and he’s set about rebuilding the program by building up a new roster.  Some players have officially visited NC State, while some have their visits already scheduled.

Mackenzie Mgbako and Derrion Reid are players who have entered the transfer portal and are of interest to Wade and the NC State coaching staff. Mgbako has also declared for the 2025 draft.

Will NC State Secure the Commitment of Mackenzie Mgbako and Derrion Reid?

Wade and NC State are actively trying to recruit Mgbako from Indiana and Reid from Alabama. Mgbako has already visited the program, while Reid is scheduled for a visit later in the month.

Mgbako was a member of the 2023 Duke basketball recruiting class before eventually decommitting and pledging allegiance to the Hoosiers.

Reid was a 5-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, with the 247Sports Composite ranking him as the #10 overall player nationally, the No. 2 Power Forward, and the #1 player in the state of Georgia. However, he barely got minutes as a freshman in Alabama.

A CBB analyst thinks Will Wade and NC State are the favorites to land these two talents.

“Mgbako, I still think NC State is the favorite and Will Wade’s got the strongest offer out there for him for sure, and then certainly with Derrion Reid, I’ll give you a few more schools that my sources say you wanna watch for.” The analyst said.

“For Derrion Reid, by the way, for me, I think he’s one of those difference makers right now, I mean, he played a role, he was hurt at Alabama, but I love Derrion Reid. I think he’s that interchangeable wing, forward who can guard a lot of positions and is versatile offensively.”

It seems Mgbako’s best offer at the moment is NC State, while Reid still has a lot of schools sniffing around, and with his visit scheduled for April 21, who knows if NC State will lock him down too.

Reid entered the Transfer Portal with a “Do Not Contact” tag, meaning schools are to wait for him to express interest in them.

So, for the fact that Reid is scheduling his first visit after entering the Transfer Portal on April 12th to NC State, it means the signs are promising.
