The “Unfinished Business” moniker isn’t random; in fact, it’s because Hardaway actually committed to the Tigers out of high school to play under his father, former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway, who is currently the Memphis head coach.
A three-star prospect out of high school, the Ashton Hardaway averaged just 2.3 ppg on 34.3% shooting from the field in only 8.3 mpg during his freshman campaign at Memphis.
Following the season, he entered the transfer portal and promptly ended up with the Gaels. He didn’t have much success there, as his scoring went down to 2.1 ppg on 35.4% shooting in 9.6 mpg. He didn’t start a game for Saint Mary’s and played only five minutes combined in the Gaels’ two NCAA Tournament contests.
Now, after a season away, Hardaway is set to reunite with his father and the Tigers.
Listed as 6’8″, 210 pounds, the forward is known for his length defensively but still has a long way to go offensively. He showed talent early on in his college career, scoring a team-high 17 points against the Michigan Wolverines in a 2023 edition of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

In that game, he nailed five of seven three-pointers and led the Tigers to a 71-67 victory.
That remains his career high, with his next highest scoring total being eight points.
But with him back in the fold at Memphis, there may be more opportunities for growth following the departure of several key players for the Tigers and playing under a coach who knows him as well as anyone.
