Asa Newell is half of an athletic power couple. The former Georgia star, who was a first-round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday, is dating Texas women’s basketball’s Aaliyah Crump.

In the first photo, Crump can be seen posing in Newell’s New Era Atlanta Hawks cap. The video shows the two dancing in matching hats to celebrate the forward becoming an NBA player.
Newell was originally selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the No. 23 pick in the NBA Draft. However, the Hawks acquired him. Atlanta gained the rights to Newell as well as a 2026 first-round draft pick, in exchange for the draft rights to Derik Queen, who was the No. 13 pick.

Newell will now prepare to begin his NBA career, while his girlfriend Crump gears up for her college career. Newell spent his sole college season at Georgia after honing his skill set at Montverde Academy in Florida.
Crump also attended Montverde Academy and will follow in her other half’s footsteps by playing at an SEC program. The No. 5 recruit will kick off her college career with the Longhorns this fall.
What Asa Newell brings to Atlanta
Asa Newell impressed in his sole college season. The 6’11” forward led Georgia in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounds (6.9 rpg). He highlighted his defensive depth with 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. The sharp-shooter averaged 54.3%, including 29.2% from beyond the arc.
Newell recorded seven double-doubles at Georgia, tied for fourth-most of all freshmen in the country. He is an offensive machine with a defensive edge, who showed promising development throughout his freshman campaign.

Hawks General Manager Onsi Saleh expressed excitement about the organization gaining Newell.
“Asa is unbelievable. With where the league is going, people with size and athleticism like that just make sense,” Saleh said. “He’s a great screener, a great human being, a ridiculous athlete, and a really smart player too. He is an unbelievable competitor and does things that impact winning.”
After a strong freshman season at Georgia, Newell will aim to build his skill set at the professional level with Atlanta.
