It is finally official: Cooper Flagg is going to the Dallas Mavericks. As he enters his new team over at Texas, his newest teammate, Anthony Davis, a No. 1 draft pick himself, gave Flagg a special and wholehearted message, which was posted by the team’s Instagram page.
“From one No. 1 overall pick to another, congratulations, man. Big accomplishment, welcome to Dallas, we’re excited to have you,” said Anthony Davis to Cooper Flagg. “You know, enjoy tonight, you and the fam.”
Despite the warm welcome, Davis made it known that Cooper Flagg hit a three-pointer over him last year, and he will not be letting that one slide, even if they are now teammates. However, he did continue with the inspiring message to his new teammate.
“I still remember that time you hit that three over me in Vegas last summer, so I gotta get you back, but most importantly man, congratulations, welcome to the team. You know we gonna get to work, work in soon, but enjoy this night with your fam and stay safe and we’ll see you in Dallas, champ,” he added.

Davis was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans back in 2012, so he knows what pressure being selected No. 1 overall really means. With Davis and Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks will have not one, not two, but three No. 1 draft picks, with the third one being Kyrie Irving, who was selected No. 1 by the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2011. Irving was also a product of Duke, like Cooper Flagg.
Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison comments on Cooper Flagg’s selection
Soon after selecting Cooper Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks front office has been patting itself on the back. This led Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison to release a statement regarding their latest acquisition.
“It’s a generational talent, a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” Harrison said. “So just top to bottom, we’re excited.”
“I think the biggest thing is he’s a two-way player,” Nico Harrison added. “When you watch him play, he plays hard. When you have a player that’s that good and people talk about the intangibles — they don’t talk about basketball — then that’s a guy who’s going to add to your culture.”
Harrison may have drafted Flagg, but he remains a very unpopular general manager, as he was the one behind the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade, which sent Doncic to the Lakers. During a draft watch party at the American Airlines Center, some fans were chanting “Fire Nico!” as the Mavs were on the dock and about to select Cooper Flagg.
