Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis‘ future with the team may be uncertain, given his substantial contract and the franchise’s situation. On Monday, Nov. 24, ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst, via the “NBA on ESPN” YouTube channel, released the latest episode of his podcast, “The Hoop Collective,” alongside his fellow sports analysts, Tim Bontemps and Tim McMahon.
At one point in the episode, the discussion turned towards Davis and his future with the Dallas-based franchise, as recent reports suggest that the team may be looking at trading away the 2020 NBA champion to alter its direction moving forward. Bontemps resonated with this move, but pointed out how difficult it would be, given the expensive contract the injury-riddled big man has for the next few years.
“You hear Anthony Davis, he just got traded for Luka Doncic. There’s was all of this, and Tim McMahon was the first to report the Mavericks are looking at the possibility of trading Anthony Davis. I talked about this in the summertime, they have to trade Anthony Davis in my opinion. They have to get out of this money. He’s owed $54 million dollars this year, he’s owed $58 million next year, he’s owed $62 million the following year,” Bontemps said. (24:25)
“They have to move on from him. However, a guy making that much money, even Anthony Davis who is still a very good player, has a very limited market of teams that are going to be able to take him, let alone give you back any value. And, that’s where it’s going to be difficult for the Mavericks to make a trade,” he added.
Davis is currently dealing with a left leg injury that has sidelined him for the past 13 Mavericks games. Reports had surfaced that his return could come as soon as the game against the Miami Heat on the same day of the podcast episode, but he was ultimately listed as doubtful. Nevertheless, Davis has only played in five matchups in the 2025-26 season, which is his 13th year in the league.

Coach Jason Kidd and the 2025-26 Dallas Mavericks are struggling to rack up wins early in the season, currently sitting in the No. 13 seed in the Western Conference with a 5-14 overall record.
