Kansas Jayhawks rookie Darryn Peterson may be out longer than expected, but it’ll be tremendously important towards his development and long-term success, an analyst has opined. On Sunday, Nov. 16, college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman of the ‘Field of 68’ uploaded a video on the @fieldof68 Instagram page, in which he shared his thoughts on Peterson’s hamstring injury and an update on it.
During the post-game press conference with coach Bill Self after the Jayhawks’ 76-57 win over the Princeton Tigers on the weekend, Self announced that Peterson will be out for the immediate future due to the injury. Goodman believes that coach Self is looking at a broader perspective, possibly saving Peterson for the deeper end of the season.
“You know, they thought it was cramps early on in the year, and it actually has been a hamstring issue that they figured out about a week or so ago, and it hasn’t gotten all the way better. Now, again, Darren Peterson wants to play. He feels like he can play. He’ll want to get out there Tuesday night at Champions Classic. But you know, if you’re Bill Self, you’re thinking about, you know, Big 12 play. You know, NCAA tournament, having a chance to go deep in the tournament,” Goodman said. (0:00)
“You’re not as worried about these. You know, he’s been doing a long time. He understands the, the value of having him at a hundred percent when it matters most. So, he is not gonna put him out there,” he added.

Even without Peterson, Kansas has continued its winning ways, having defeated Princeton and, before that, a 77-46 triumph over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. Peterson has logged in for two out of the four games so far for the Jayhawks, resulting in a 1-1 record. The Jayhawks currently have a 3-1 overall record, and they have a marquee game against the Duke Blue Devils next.

A Rushed Hamstring Injury Recovery Process Will Limit Darryn Peterson’s Play, Jeff Goodman Says
In the same video, Jeff Goodman doubled down on his thoughts about coach Bill Self, suggesting that Self should adopt a more long-term perspective while dealing with Darryn Peterson’s setback. The analyst added that a rushed recovery process, especially when it comes to hamstring injuries, may result in the freshman playing with restrictions throughout the year.
“ And, we know how hamstrings injuries are. I mean, those things, if he goes out there and he’s not at a hundred percent and he gets it again, he’s going to be out a long time. I mean, those things can keep you out for, you know, a month, month and a half, and then you’re playing with it the rest of the year and you’re playing cautious,” Goodman explained. (0:35)
