The Utah roster received a big lift when two-time Conference USA All-League selection Don McHenry signed with the team after winning the 2024 All-CUSA Tournament MVP title. Last season, he played as the 6’0″ guard for Western Kentucky, scoring 14.6 points per game and establishing himself as one of the top guards from mid-major programs.
McHenry made his decision public on April 21, choosing to play at Utah instead of multiple high-major programs following his entrance into the transfer portal during his sophomore standout season. The Utah Basketball program received a substantial boost from head coach Craig Smith with the commitment of an exciting Conference USA standout.

Don McHenry’s Journey from Western Kentucky to Utah
From Western Kentucky to Conference USA stardom, McHenry became one of the league’s most reliable guards before transferring to Utah. WKU experienced success under his leadership when he raised his scoring average to 13.6 points in his freshman year and helped win the conference championship, which secured an NCAA Tournament spot.

During the 2024 CUSA Tournament, he scored 17 points on average while securing the MVP award. The Bowling Green years of his career were defined by his ability to perform in critical situations.
McHenry received Second Team All-CUSA honors during both his freshman and sophomore seasons, which showcases his outstanding persistence. He played in every single game of the 2023–24 season while averaging more than 30 minutes per match.
As Utah prepares for Big 12 competition, McHenry, with his dedication and leadership skills, brings more than 900 career points and essential postseason experience.
McHenry’s growth from a young prospect to a reliable mid-major standout reflects his strong work ethic and steady rise as a competitive guard. His steady progress reflects a player ready to compete at the Power Six level, blending strong statistical production with important intangibles like leadership.
What McHenry Brings to the Utah Utes
McHenry is known for his quickness, reliable shooting from the perimeter, and defensive versatility. His physicality and ability to control the game’s tempo should allow him to match up well in the Big 12.
Last season, he proved his efficiency in shooting by hitting 45.8% of field goals and 36.4% of three-pointers. The addition of McHenry delivers Utah a player who can create his own shot, but also makes space for teammates to operate.
The Utah basketball team now has two established players, Gabe Madsen and Keba Keita, as McHenry joins the roster. The ability of Craig Smith to use him in different situations allows Smith greater flexibility to manage the team tempo.
The Utah team wrapped up last season with 22 wins and 15 losses as they advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals. With McHenry’s leadership and championship experience, the Utes are in a stronger position to make a push for the NCAA Tournament.
