In the wake of the Field of 68’s latest college basketball preview, controversy erupted as the ACC was lumped together in the Top 10, overshadowing the heated debate between Alabama and Auburn’s roster builds for 2024-25. The discussion, led by hosts Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster, sparked intense reactions from fans and analysts alike.
Roster Retention vs. Roster Turnover: The Alabama-Auburn Divide
Goodman really nailed it when he said, “While Auburn might have higher-end talent, I just love the retention. Five of your top eight. If you can do that, man, these days, you’re doing something right.”
And he’s absolutely right—keeping that many key players together is no small feat anymore.
Auburn, on the other hand, faces a massive rebuild. Only sophomore Tahaad Pettiford returns from last year’s core rotation, with the rest of the roster composed of transfers and newcomers like Keshawn Hall, Keshawn Murphy, and Elijah Freeman.
While these additions bring promise, the lack of returning contributors raises concerns about chemistry and cohesion.
“You’re throwing a bunch of new guys together… I don’t think you have as much retention,” Goodman noted, highlighting the unpredictability of integrating so many new faces.
Talent-wise, Auburn’s ceiling remains high, especially with Pettiford expected to make a sophomore leap and Hall bringing proven scoring from the Big 12.
“One of the biggest strengths of that Auburn team last year was chemistry, and now you’re just throwing a bunch of dudes into a hat and saying, ‘All right, Pettiford, you’re going to take this new group that you don’t know,” Rob Dauster said.
This uncertainty stands in stark contrast to Alabama’s established system under Nate Oats, where returning veterans are expected to thrive.
Projected Outlook and Expert Consensus
Both teams are expected to stay as SEC powerhouses and probably land in the Top 15 nationally. When they faced off most recently, Auburn’s high-powered offense helped them win 94-85 over Alabama, but that was with a roster that’s mostly gone now. With Auburn losing so many players, pulling off that kind of performance again isn’t a sure thing.
Most experts seem to think Alabama’s the safer bet right now. As Goodman put it:
“I would probably say that Alabama’s the, uh, the quote-unquote better team right now, but I think they’re both really close and I think both of them are going to be top 15 again.”

The Crimson Tide’s mix of returning players and proven chemistry makes them stand out in a sport where rosters change constantly these days.
Auburn has many new players, which makes them an exciting team with a lot of potential. Alabama’s rare roster retention and established system give them the edge heading into 2024-25.
