BYU Cougars freshman AJ Dybantsa has laid down what his driving factor was in his decision to commit to BYU for his first, and likely only, year of college hoops. On Tuesday, Nov. 11, CBS Sports uploaded a video to its YouTube channel of a recent interview conducted on Dybantsa, where the rising collegiate basketball star dives deeps into topics circling his budding career, his off-court life and the Cougars program as a whole.
At one point in the interview, Dybantsa was asked about what his driving factor was towards his decision to commit to BYU, given that he has previously mentioned that it was not fueled by money. Dybantsa, who currently has an NIL value of $4.4 million per On3, then mentioned that it was about his family and his fit with the team, especially since he has a more long-term outlook when it comes to making money.
“Just my family, just knowing like I have the ability to like, the thing with the money was like hopefully, God-willingly, I’m making it to the NBA. So, however long it’s going to take get there, I’m going to be making more money than I’ll be making in college. So, just try to use the best fit to be the most prepared for in the NBA,” Dybantsa shared. (3:19)
Dybantsa and the rest of coach Young’s Cougars have uncorked a 2-0 overall record so far early in the campaign, which puts them as the first seed in the Big 12 conference currently. Their next opponent is scheduled to be the Delaware Blue Hens at home, the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
AJ Dybantsa Also Admitted That Kevin Young’s NBA Experience Persuaded Him To Commit To His Program
Also in the interview with CBS Sports, AJ Dybantsa was asked about coach Kevin Young himself, and how much of a factor he was towards his decision to play for the BYU Cougars. For the young sensation, he mentions that Young played a huge role towards his commitment, and is fueled by his experience coach in the NBA. Young previously had assistant coaching stints for the Phoenix Suns and the Philadelphia 76ers.
“Yeah, he was everything. Obviously, just him coming from the NBA, like directly from the NBA being an assistant coach, coaching my favorite players. It was kind of like a no-brainer for me. He obviously hired like Akash (Sebastian), who’s like our analytics, and Danielle, who does our diets, our nutrition. So, it’s kind of like a no-brainer to me,” Dybantsa explained. (2:53)
