NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently chimed in on the ongoing Chris Paul – LA Clippers saga. To recap, the Clippers, as terrible as they have been yet again, sent Paul home earlier this month after an alleged disagreement with the coach.
Currently headed toward the bottom of the Western Conference charts with a 6-20 record, they have been disrespectful toward a franchise legend who has already announced this would be his last year in the league.
Despite knowing the weight of the retirement season and understanding what Paul means to the fans, the Clippers’ decision to send him home has been widely criticized. Many believe the two-decade-old veteran deserves a better send-off.
Silver, during a recent press conference ahead of the NBA Cup Final, echoed a similar sentiment. When asked to comment on the drama, he said that he had talked to CP3 about it and said it’s an unfortunate situation.
Silver said that he was unaware of what was happening inside the organization and got to know about it through an alert on his phone in the middle of the night. He said he was “dismayed” for everyone involved, and he’d love to see Paul finish his season with another team.
“I’ve admired his leadership over the years. He has a dozen All-Star appearances. I think this is his 21st year in the league. So, I’d love to see him finish off the season on another team and it’s already announced this is his last season,” Silver said.
Adam Silver on Chris Paul’s divorce from the Clippers:
“I’ve talked to Chris, I’ve talked to Steve Ballmer but frankly not about this. I probably was in bed when I saw an alert on my phone. I would say I was dismayed just for everyone involved…I would love to see him finish… pic.twitter.com/U0E09YNRoN

When asked if he’d have loved to see this season unfold differently, Silver said that it won’t be right for him to comment on it. As unfortunate as the last few weeks have been, he believes it’s between a franchise and its player.
The Clippers Have Handled the Chris Paul Situation Terribly
Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, in her recent report, has detailed what went down in LA between CP3 and the head coach. As a veteran leader seeing his team get dismantled by every opposition, Paul tried talk to players frequently in order to figure out a solution.
However, the staff didn’t like his approach and decided to shut him down. Whenever he tried to guide players on training methods, he was asked not to undermine the staff. There were also complaints from players and coaches about Paul being abrasive.
It’s almost illogical to have someone as experienced and accomplished as CP3 in the team and expect him to warm the bench while the team gets humiliated on every outing. Even when he tried to share his experience on the teams he has been on, he was denied the opportunity.
Lawrence Frank and Ty Lue are of the opinion that Paul’s leadership style wasn’t good for the team. While the head coach and GM are free to do whatever they feel like with their team, these decisions to undermine Chris Paul aren’t sitting well with fans.
