Dwayne Wimbley Jr., a four-star power forward from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has officially committed to UMass, highlighting his confidence in head coach Frank Martin and his staff as a key reason for his decision.
Wimbley Jr., who initially committed to Florida State before reopening his recruitment, now represents a major addition for the Minutemen. As reported by 247Sports’ Dushawn London, Wimbley Jr.’s commitment reflects how coaching stability and a focus on player development were critical factors in his choice to join the UMass program.

Dwayne Wimbley Jr., a 6’7″, 210-pound power forward from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, announced his commitment to UMass, choosing the Minutemen over programs including Chicago State, Florida International, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Hampton, and others.
Ranked No. 165 nationally, No. 37 in terms of power forwards, and No. 19 overall in Florida for the Class of 2025 by 247Sports, Wimbley Jr. had initially given a verbal commitment to Florida State before he decommitted after the coach of that time, Leonard Hamilton, retired last month.

“I trust Coach (Martin) and his staff with my development,” Wimbley told 247Sports regarding his decision to join UMass.
Wimbley Jr., son of former Miami Hurricane Dwayne Wimbley (1997–2001), built a standout high school career. He was instrumental in leading St. Thomas Aquinas to its second-ever state title—and first since 2001—with a 71-63 victory over Orlando Evans on March 8.
Wimbley Jr. averaged 16.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals across 29 games this season, which helped him secure the Miami Herald’s All-Broward Class 5A-7A Player of the Year accolade honors.
UMass head coach Frank Martin with his great concern for the growth of his players was very quickly able to establish that strong relationship with Wimbley and his family.

It was Martin’s track record of creating an environment that is safe for development that made the boys switch and kept the Minutemen on track as they became known as the place to go for national talent.
The addition of Wimbley Jr. brings size and versatility to UMass and reflects the program’s growing ability to attract and secure high-level recruits in an increasingly competitive landscape.
