Seth Henigan Handles Draft Process with Poise

The spotlight and former Memphis quarterback remain fast friends. In Memphis, Henigan’s name and reputation preceded him into the draft. Self-awareness does not occur in most people’s psyches, not to mention athletes.

Yet, the former Tiger approaches the physical and mental portions of his 2025 NFL Draft journey. With so much on the line, Henigan takes it all in stride. In discussing his thought pattern with the Memphis Commercial Appeal, he laid out his mindset,

“I felt like I had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” he said. “You only get this opportunity and this process one time in your whole life. And I’m not going to waste that opportunity by not running because I’m slow. I’m going to train, get faster, and then try to put it on display. And that’s what I did.”

Program Leader

Originally a three-star prospect from Denton, Tex, Henigan played three seasons for his father, throwing for 7,234 yards and 79 touchdowns. He ended high school with a 44-2 overall record, winning a state championship. As a result, schools like North Texas, Nevada, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Harvard, and Pennsylvania offered him. However, something about the University of Memphis drew him to campus.

On June 30, 2021, Henigan enrolls at Memphis, embarking upon a legendary career. During his 50 games as a starter, Henigan sported a 34-16 record. In addition, he threw for 14,266 yards (13th all-time) and 104 passing touchdowns (26th overall) with a 64 percent completion percentage. Within those games, he threw for at least 300 yards 22 times.

What Experts Say

Despite the accolades, Henigan must battle for a roster spot, as experts consider him a late-rounded potential undrafted free agent. Two experts, Lance Zierlein from the NFL and NFL Draft Buzz’s Andrew Moo, reiterate similar traits and weaknesses.

Zierlein, on Henigan’s accuracy issues:

“On paper, his accuracy is intermediate and deep, which is below average, but on tape, he simply didn’t have receivers who could separate and crabeater-passing windows. The production has been sold,d and he’s worth a look as a potential backup.”

Meanwhile, Moore possesses a bit more optimism regarding his prospects, stating:

“Ultimately, Henigan profiles as a developmental prospect who could grow into a backup role with proper coaching. His ceiling will depend on his ability to clean up mechanical flaws and enhance his physical tools. Team, be patient as he adapts to NFL speed and complexity, with his floor being a practice squad candidate who may struggle to maintain a roster spot long-term.”

Despite the headaches and stress involved in getting himself ready for the draft, Henigan appears calm. In the best-case scenario, a team calls his name on day three, bringing him to camp with a shot at winning the job. On the other hand, the worst case doesn’t look awful.

If a team doesn’t draft him, Henigan will get to negotiate a contract as a UDFA. By that measure, his invite to camp still happens,  and he will fight for a job. NFL history is flush with stories of undrafted players making an impact.

Jake Delhomme went from UDFA to leading his team to a Super Bowl appearance. Tony Romo had never heard his name called and had enjoyed a successful, profitable career as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Kurt Warner, the patron saint of undrafted passers, took a circuitous yet ultimately successful path to the league.
