The Utah Utes have had their fair share of famous quarterbacks in their days. With the injury status of Cam Rising pushing their bench into action, who exactly is Isaac Wilson and why should you know his name?
Isaac Wilson’s Background
Wilson may be a familiar name to football fans, as he is the younger brother of current New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. However, when fans watch Isaac take the field, it’s clear that he has carved out his own path to success and has the potential for a standout college career.
Wilson attended Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah, where he had a remarkable 2023 season.
Dominating at the high school level, he amassed 5,901 total yards, ranking second in the nation. This included an impressive 4,595 passing yards, placing him sixth in the country, and 1,304 rushing yards, the 12th most in the state of Utah.
His dual-threat capability made him a dynamic force on the field, showcasing not only his arm strength and accuracy but also his mobility and playmaking ability.
In an interview with Deseret News, Isaac shared some of the wisdom Zach imparted to him about playing at a high level.
“Keep football simple and keep your confidence high. Be confident and not cocky. Because there’s a big difference between those two because if you’re too cocky, people are going to take advantage of that,” Isaac said. This advice seems to have served him well, as he maintained a level-headed approach throughout his senior season.
Corner Canyon had an exceptional year under Isaac’s leadership, finishing the season with a 13-1 record. Their only loss came against the national powerhouse Bishop Gorman, the No. 1 ranked team in the country. However, they rebounded strongly, with Wilson guiding the team to a 6A State Championship victory over Skyridge with a 41-27 win.
His ability to step up in big games and lead his team to victory was evident throughout the season.
During his recruitment, Wilson attracted interest from multiple top college programs, receiving offers from schools like BYU, Miami (FL), Michigan, and Oregon.
While his older brother Zach starred at BYU, many expected Isaac to follow in his footsteps. However, Isaac chose a different path, committing to the University of Utah. The decision was influenced in part by Zach, who helped Isaac evaluate Utah’s offense.
“We had Zach come down—my brother—and look over the offense that (Andy) Ludwig has, and all that. And he said it is probably one of the best and closest offenses he’s seen to the NFL that we visited. And he just loved it,” Isaac explained.
At Utah, Isaac Wilson has initially found himself behind experienced starter Cam Rising, who was expected to lead the Utes into the 2024 season.
Unfortunately for Utes fans, Rising’s injury bug struck in Week 2 and Wilson was thrust into action early during his career. However, Wilson is poised to make a significant impact in college football when his time comes with his combination of talent, football IQ, and the strong support system around him.
