Syracuse Orange QB Kyle McCord has dominated all week at the Shrine Bowl, and his hard work paid off, as he earned “All-Practice East Team” honors. McCord was widely reported as the best QB at the Shrine Bowl. CBS Sports and NFL.com called him the top QB at practice.
For fans who watched McCord at Syracuse, this doesn’t come as a surprise, as he balled out for the Orange.
Kyle McCord’s College Journey
McCord was a four-star QB recruit who committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021. He sat on the bench his freshman and sophomore seasons, learning from and watching now-Houston Texans star QB C.J. Stroud.
McCord took over as Ohio State’s starter as a Junior in 2023. He lit up the stat sheet consistently, making plays for the Buckeyes and throwing for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Unfortunately, in the biggest game of Ohio State’s season, McCord threw the game-losing interception against Michigan.
Despite having a very good season in 2023, the Buckeye fans weren’t satisfied and chased him out of town, bringing in Kansas State Wildcats QB Will Howard via the transfer portal.
McCord took a chance and transferred to Syracuse to play for first-year head coach Fran Brown. Under Brown and offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon, McCord put on a show his senior year, finishing 10th in the Heisman Trophy voting.
McCord threw for an FBS best 4,779 yards, 34 TDs, and 12 ints. The success McCord found at Syracuse helped boost his draft stock, but he still had a lot to prove heading into the Shrine Bowl.
