During the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, winning coaches usually don’t get a Gatorade bath; they get mayonnaise poured all over them. On Friday, it will either be the head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs or the Wake Forest Demon Deacons getting a mayonnaise bath, as the game kicks off from the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Both teams have plenty to prove after each had good seasons, but not good enough to make it to the CFP. The 5-7 Bulldogs and 8-4 Demon Deacons are also expected to miss players either to injury or to players opting out due to entering the transfer portal, declaring for the NFL draft or other reasons.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl: Wake Forest vs. Mississippi State Opt-Outs And Injury Report
Mississippi State Bulldogs
- S Tony Mitchell: Opted out, entered transfer portal
- LB Derion Gullette: Injured, questionable
So far, only one player is opting out after entering the transfer portal, with the team looking healthy ahead of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. That being said, the Bulldogs were lucky to make it to a bowl game this year after a lot of other teams announced that they would not be playing.
QB1 Blake Shapen and S Isaac Smith are potential players who might be opting out, though there is a possibility that Shapen might suit up for one last time for Mississippi State. Defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzle will also not be with the team during the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, as he was fired earlier this year due to the team’s defensive woes.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
- DT Mateen Ibirogba: Opted out, entered transfer portal

- RB Demond Claiborne: Opted out, declared for the NFL Draft
- EDGE Nuer Gatkuoth: Injured, questionable

While Mississippi State does not have a lot of transferees, Wake Forest has a lot more, along with a few more injured players. They also have more potential players opting out, including RT Fa’alili Fa’amoe, S Davaughn Patterson and S Nick Andersen. That being said, they are still the favorites coming into this matchup.
