Max Johnson is entering the transfer portal. The UNC backup quarterback will be looking for a change after a disappointing season. UNC itself have struggled, but the veteran QB still has one more year of eligibility. Where will Johnson end up making his move?

Top 5 Landing Spots for Max Johnson
1. Florida State
Florida State should be in the market for a transfer QB this year. Tommy Castellanos is going to be out after he couldn’t get another year of eligibility. They have to somehow improve after another disappointing season as well. What better way than to grab a veteran QB to stabilize the offense? Johnson should be able to bring enough to the table for FSU to take a chance here.
2. Auburn Tigers
Auburn and QBs. It has not been great since Cam Newton. While there is hope this year, they could always use a veteran behind center. Johnson could be that option. His experience could be potentially dangerous for a team looking to bounce back.
3. Virginia Tech
The Hokies brought in James Franklin, who has been known to use older players rather than younger ones. Beau Pribula’s transfer would be a primary example, as he left the Nittany Lions and had a great season at Missouri. If Franklin sees potential in Johnson, a move could very much be in the cards.
4. Clemson Tigers
It isn’t likely, but there is a chance that Johnson goes to the Tigers. They are in the same conference, so Johnson gets the check mark there. Clemson has also had some rough seasons recently and will look to bounce back as fast as they can. Bringing in Johnson would fit the system, too, as Cade Klubnik was more of a pocket passer similar to Johnson’s style.
5. Louisville Cardinals
Louisville could be a dark-horse contender to try to bring in Johnson. The Cardinals will move from Miller Moss this offseason with a very good core on both sides of the ball. Louisville has been close to playoff status two years in a row. Maybe a veteran QB could keep the Cardinals relevant, making Johnson a great candidate to be a Cardinal.
Bottom Line
Max Johnson could honestly end up anywhere. His playing time doesn’t give enough of an indication of whether he could pan out. Although he is a veteran. So it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Johnson’s move this offseason ends up helping a team be a playoff contender in 2026.
