‘Wish Nothing but Misery for Him’: Fans Left Frustrated As Matt Rhule’s Nebraska Struggles Against Iowa After $25M Worth Contract Extension

Matt Rhule is facing intense pressure as Nebraska continues to slide late in the season. The Huskers have fallen into a rough stretch, dropping back-to-back games and slipping to eighth place in the Big Ten standings.

Their overall record now sits at 7–5, reflecting the inconsistencies they are dealing with. The latest setback came against Iowa, a 16–40 defeat that exposed familiar weaknesses and pushed frustration among fans to a breaking point.

The loss to Iowa was one of the program’s most discouraging outings of the year. Nebraska struggled on both sides of the ball. The offense failed completely, and the defense had no answers for Iowa’s physical style, allowing big plays at crucial moments.

With the team on a two-game losing streak and searching for direction, fans have turned increasingly vocal online. The frustration spilled onto the Husker Online forum, where one supporter posted an angry message aimed directly at Rhule.

“I wish nothing but misery for him for the next five years until we can finally fire him,” the fan wrote. “I hope that his team loses 60-0 every week like Rutgers used to while having a couple thousand fans in attendance at most. This guy is a complete and total loser that is miles worse than Mike Riley, and almost as bad as Frost. F you for permanently destroying this program, Matt.”

This wasn’t the only noticeable reaction from fans as Rhule has become a laughingstock and most fans are taking shots at him.

“The Nebraska athletic department trying to take back Matt Rhule’s contract extension,” a fan posted with a meme.

“I can’t believe Nebraska fans celebrated Matt Rhule’s extension,” a fan wrote.

“I think I speak for EVERYONE when I say Matt Rhule is the most overrated coach in college football,” a fan wrote.

“Luke Fickell “the worst hire in college football” has more ranked wins than Matt Rhule with Nebraska,” a fan wrote.

“That Matt Rhule contract extension looks like the most ridiculous contract in college sports. He’s all yours, nobody taking him away from you,” a fan wrote.

Nebraska entered the season hoping to build on the foundation created last year. Instead, the team has once again stumbled late, raising doubts about whether this version of the Huskers can compete at a higher level.

Matt Rhule Recently Signed an Extension

Rhule’s struggles come at a time when expectations around him are higher than ever. Just weeks ago, Nebraska announced a contract extension that increased his security and stretched his deal into the next decade.

The initial agreement was already one of the most significant in program history, carrying more than $25 million in guaranteed compensation. The extension signaled the university’s belief that Rhule could stabilize the program and guide it toward national relevance again.

The reasoning behind the extension was straightforward. Nebraska wanted continuity and believed Rhule’s rebuilding track record would eventually translate into results.

But patience is being tested. Nebraska has yet to show consistent improvement against ranked opponents, and losses like the one against Iowa make it harder for supporters to trust the process.
