On Thursday, Nov. 6, the Dallas Cowboys revealed that defensive end Marshawn Kneeland had tragically died. Initially, the team didn’t reveal the cause of death.
Now, a report from the Frisco Police Department claims that on Wednesday night, at approximately 10:39 pm CT, a vehicle evaded Texas Department of Public Safety troopers during a pursuit and entered the city.
The vehicle was eventually found crashed southbound on Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway. Kneeland had fled the scene on foot, and by the time he was found by officers, he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Speaking at a press conference, Nebraska’s coach Matt Rhule seemed horrified that a young player like Kneeland decided to take his own life.
“Our generation of kids, my kids, they all just say, ‘Yeah, I’m fine. I’m straight.’ You really gotta unearth it,” Rhule said. “That young man scored a TD just a couple days ago, and to the outside world, you’d think he’s at the pinnacle. But he was dealing with something. I don’t know what it was. But I pray for him and his family.”

Kneeland was in his sophomore NFL season, having been picked by the team in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He played college football at Western Michigan, where he was a Second Team All-MAC selection in 2023.
His mother died in February 2024, months before he made it to the NFL.
