Mike Locksley and the Maryland Terrapins coaching staff features a number of experienced people who can get guys to the NFL. We take a look at each position group to see which unit will thrive in 2023.
Maryland Terrapins Coaching Staff 2023
Head Coach, Mike Locksley
Locksley just can’t stay away from Maryland. He’s meant to be here.
Currently in his third stint with the school, Locksley’s found a way to elevate the program in one of the toughest divisions in college football.
He’s made a number of stops before this, including most recently at Alabama as the offensive coordinator. Here’s the entire list of where he’s been for his career:
- 1992: Towson State, Defensive Backs/Special Teams
- 1993: Naval Academy Preparatory School, Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs
- 1994: Naval Academy Preparatory School, Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line
- 1995: Pacific, Outside Linebackers
- 1996: Army, Wide Receivers/Tight Ends
- 1997: Maryland, Running Backs
- 1998-02: Maryland, Running Backs/Recruiting Coordinator
- 2003-04: Florida, Running Backs/Recruiting Coordinator
- 2005: Illinois, Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends

- 2016: Alabama, Offensive Analyst
- 2017: Alabama, Co-Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers
- 2018: Alabama, Offensive Coordinator
- 2019-present: Maryland, Head Coach
Offensive Coordinator, Josh Gattis
While his time at Miami didn’t go as planned, Josh Gattis comes to Maryland looking to help elevate the offense. He has a talented quarterback in Taulia Tagovailoa, so getting the offense up to speed shouldn’t be a problem.

Gattis won the Broyles Award in 2021 while at Michigan as offensive coordinator and brings plenty of experience as a play-caller. Before Michigan, he served as Co-Offensive Coordinator at Alabama and Passing Game Coordinator at Penn State.
Co-Offensive Coordinator, Kevin Sumlin
Kevin Sumlin reunites with Locksley and brings a wealth of experience with him. He most recently served as head coach and General Manager for the Houston Gamblers of the USFL. Before that, he held the title of head coach at Arizona, Texas A&M, and Houston.
Sumlin, a linebacker for Purdue from 1983-86, worked with some of the most explosive and exciting quarterbacks in college football, including Johnny Manziel, Khalil Tate, and Case Keenum. Manziel and the 2012 offense broke the 7,000-yard mark for the year.
Defensive Coordinator, Brian Williams
It’s fitting that Brian Williams and Mike Locksley work together, given their track records as recruiters. Williams knows how to identify talent, and it’s a big reason why the Terrapins have seen so many of their players head to the NFL Draft (or even the transfer portal to different schools).
He didn’t waste time making an impact, as the Terps allowed their fewest points per game since 2010 and their fewest number of yards per game since 2012. Before his time with the Maryland Terrapins, he held positions at UAB, Georgia, and Florida State.
Special Teams Coordinator, James Thomas Jr.
Also the outside linebackers coach, James Thomas Jr. has had plenty of experience in a coordinator role. At his peak of handling multiple different positions, he served as Co-Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, and defensive backs coach at Angelo State.
He also spent time at Clarion and Western New Mexico as Defensive coordinator.
Running Back Coach, Latrell Scott
One of the most underrated position coaches in the country, Latrell Scott deserves a ton of credit for his work with Keaton Mitchell over the last two years at ECU. He joins the Maryland Terrapins coaching staff after many stops, including Norfolk State, Virginia State, James Madison, Richmond, Virginia, Tennessee, VMI, Western Carolina, and Fork Union Military Academy.
Wide Receiver Coach, Gunter Brewer
When you’re the position coach of Randy Moss, Justin Blackmon, and Dez Bryant, people notice. Brewer’s a proven developer of talent, and he’s helped a list of Terps receivers elevate their game into the NFL.
Brewer’s previous stops include WR Coach gigs at Marshall, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss (also associate head coach), Louisville, and with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.
Offensive Line Coach, Brian Braswell
Braswell returned to the collegiate game after spending multiple years at the professional level. His previous stints include with the St. Louis Battlehawks (XFL), Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals.
Inside Linebacker Coach, Lance Thompson
Thompson knows what it takes to win, and he’s been a part of multiple national championship-winning teams at Alabama, Georgia Tech, and LSU. He’s now coached at 10 different schools since entering the coaching realm in 1988.
Cornerback Coach, Henry Baker
Everything’s come full circle for Henry Baker. He got his start with the Maryland Terrapins as a recruiting intern in 2001, and returned to the Terps in 2020 to coach the cornerbacks.
He’s also coached defensive backs with the New York Giants, North Carolina, Rutgers, Delaware, and East Stroudsburg.
Safeties Coach, Zac Spavital
Spavital comes to Maryland from Texas State, and the coaching staff hopes he can help create more turnovers in 2023. Before Texas State, he also coached at Texas Tech, Houston, and Oklahoma.
