The Academy’s Legendary Moments and Future Stars

The Manning Passing Academy has evolved from humble beginnings into college football’s most exclusive quarterback gathering. Cooper Manning explains the camp’s origins: “The Bowen family had a camp, Peyton had attended. So, all the, you know, Terry Bowen and Tommy Bowen and Bobby Bowen and all the family got together and had this camp.”

What started 29 years ago with 200 people at Tulane has transformed into a massive operation. “We have roughly 1,400 campers, 1,400 eighth grade through, you know, high school seniors, that come down for a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday in late June and sweat their tail off,” Cooper notes.

The camp attracts talent from across the globe. “We’ll have as many as 42 states represented from the camper side and we’ve had kids from Finland and all over Canada and Europe. And I mean, you know, we had some that don’t even speak English,” Cooper reveals about the Academy’s international reach.

The real magic happens with the college counselors. Cooper describes the current setup: “We’ll have 45 starting college quarterbacks come and be counselors, but also soak up the mojo and the tutelage of Peyton, Eli and then other coaches.”

Cooper recalls witnessing future greatness firsthand. When discussing memorable moments, he shares: “I can remember standing next to Peyton one time when these college kids were throwing and Matthew Stafford dropped back and threw one and Peyton was like, ‘Yep, he’ll be the number one pick.’ And it was like two throws.”

The Academy has produced countless legendary moments. Cooper vividly remembers Josh Allen’s incredible display: “I remember watching Josh Allen. They had a quarterback competition. It was raining and it wasn’t lightning, just raining and he threw a ball 79 yards in the rain and hit the back of a moving golf cart. That was his target.”

The camp maintains its fundamental approach despite the evolving game. “We haven’t changed a lot. It’s still three step drop, five step drop, under center, shotgun, play action, throwing screens and just keeping it really fundamental,” Cooper explains about their timeless methodology.

The Academy’s selection process remains meticulous. “My dad is very careful in who he selects and let’s come back to be a counselor and it’s not often that you will go to an NFL team and if not the starter, backup, and third string guy are all Manning Passing Academy alums in some fashion,” Cooper proudly states.

The camp’s lasting impact extends beyond football fundamentals, creating a brotherhood among quarterbacks who later compete at the highest level. Cooper notes the continuing connections: “I ran into Kirk Cousins this weekend and he said he was talking to my dad and Archie told him that he, in his phone Kirk Cousins is still like Michigan State quarterback, you know, 2011.”

The Academy’s formula remains unchanged: combine fundamental instruction with family atmosphere and peer mentorship. This simple approach continues producing NFL champions, proving that authentic development trumps flashy gimmicks every time.
