Malik Nabers Explains Why the Giants Didn’t Draft Shedeur Sanders

As the New York Giants aim to return to prominence, Malik Nabers will be a central piece of their crew. As a rookie last season, the former LSU Tigers receiver and sixth-overall 2024 draft pick set franchise records, even though the quarterback situation was iffy.

Because of this inconsistent quarterback play, many wondered if the Giants would take Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft to shore up that position.

After posting 109 receptions for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns, Nabers watched his team take Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick. Being that the Giants signed veteran QBs Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston as free agents, Nabers felt the choice made sense.

“You just paid Russ, you just paid Jameis,” Nabers said Thursday on the “7PM in Brooklyn With Carmelo Anthony” podcast. “Top-three person, you’ve gotta find a way to put that money into somebody. You draft a quarterback—now you got a whole bunch of money that went to the quarterback room.”

Anthony, a former NBA star, chimed in on Brian Daboll’s team’s situation at signal-caller.

“Logically, (it) would be, ‘We got Russ, we got Jameis. We got two veteran quarterbacks. We don’t wanna bring Shedeur in to wait. He’s not gonna wanna wait,'” Anthony said. “If I have the opportunity to draft Shedeur or Abdul Carter, already having Russ and Jameis, I’m gonna draft Abdul Carter because I’m still believing in Russ.”

“…I don’t want Shedeur to be fourth in the QB room. But, I wouldn’t handle it that way. I wouldn’t make excuses about interviews. I wouldn’t make excuses about anything else.”

Nabers was complimentary of how Shedeur Sanders dealt with his torturous draft wait, which included a prank call and scores of social media memes.

“For him to still handle it professionally, kudos to him,” Nabers said. “You know, having all those people invited, speaking at the end of it, going fifth round, he still talks to the coach very respectfully.

“(He said,) ‘I can’t wait to get there, can’t wait to meet my teammates. You know, I’m gonna be a good quarterback.’ Showing up to the organization and still having good smiles around people, do you feel me? That just goes to show what kinda person he is,” Nabers explained.
