LSU Standout Names His Pick to Challenge Arch Manning, Jeremiah Smith and More in Race to Follow Travis Hunter’s Heisman Legacy

The Heisman race is quite close coming into the 2025 season, with names like Arch Manning, Jeremiah Smith, LaNorris Sellers, among others, being some of the early favorites. However, LSU’s Whit Weeks believes that his teammate, Garrett Nussmeier, will beat them all for the coveted trophy this year.

Whit Weeks was at the SEC Media Days on Tuesday and told reporters that he is confident that Nussmeier will win the most coveted individual award in all of college football.

“I think he (Garrett Nussmeier) is gonna win the Heisman this year,” Whit Weeks told reporters.

Nussmeier and Manning are largely seen as the two best quarterbacks coming into the 2025 season. The LSU man is coming off an impressive season in 2024, completing 64.2% of his pass attempts for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions.

Both Nussmeier and Whit Weeks will get the chance to prove that they are worth the hype on August 30 when they finally make their 2025 season debut against Clemson in one of the most highly-anticipated openers of the season. ABC will be airing the game at 7:30 PM ET.

Whit Weeks Talks About Garrett Nussmeier’s Leadership at LSU During the SEC Media Days

At the SEC Media Days, Whit Weeks was accompanied by fellow LSU stars quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and wide receiver Chris Hilton. They were LSU’s three representatives and each of them answered several questions from reporters.

During this time, Weeks was asked about Nussmeier and how he led the team and how he and his teammates felt about having Nussmeier lead them. He said:

“First of all, that dude’s a baller, so when you have a quarterback like him, it’s hard not to gravitate towards him. I mean, he has a big personality. He’s fun to be around. Everybody in the locker room loves him,” he told reporters. “When your quarterback is that guy on your team, it’s very exciting to see because when your quarterback’s your leader, usually you’re going to have a good team.”

He also talked about moving into a more senior role, saying that he feels “cool” taking the younger linebackers under his wing and showing them the ropes at Baton Rouge.
