“Baiting to Get Me in Trouble”: LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier Plays It Safe When Asked to Choose Between Ja’Marr Chase, Malik Nabers and More

During the 2025 SEC Media Days, LSU Tigers starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was put in a tough spot by a reporter, who asked him about picking the best LSU receiver currently playing in the NFL. Nussmeier knew that whoever he picks, a controversy will be on his doorstep.

Faced with choosing between generational talents like Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and his former teammates Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., Nussmeier didn’t bite. The quarterback dodged the question diplomatically, saying:

“I mean, that is a question that is baiting me to get in trouble. Look, I played with Malik and BT, so those are my dogs. And obviously I have a lot of respect for Jets and Ja’Marr, but you know, Malik and BT, those guys are pretty special. I mean, we came in the same class together, so I’m definitely gonna have to give them my vote out of respect for my boys.”

Before Nabers and Thomas Jr. were picked in the 2024 NFL draft, they had an explosive season at LSU with Jayden Daniels as QB1 and Garrett Nussmeier serving as backup. Nabers ended the year with 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns, while Thomas led the nation with 17 receiving scores.

LSU has a history of producing best WRs in the country, as evident by the likes of Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Jefferson, Chase, Nabers and Thomas.

In 2025, Nussmeier will be tasked with finding new targets, including transfer standouts like CJ Daniels, Nic Anderson and Chris Hilton Jr.

Garrett Nussmeier Has Heisman-Hopeful Year Ahead of Him

At SEC Media Days in Atlanta, LSU’s QB Garrett Nussmeier was one of three Tigers accompanying coach Brian Kelly. Under his leadership, the preseason expectations are high. The Tigers are ranked among the SEC’s top five schools entering the 2025 season.

Apart from that, in early Heisman odds, Nussmeier is a betting favorite just behind Texas Longhorns QB1 Arch Manning. LSU linebacker Whit Weeks boldly predicted he’ll win the Heisman Trophy this year. FanDuel currently lists him as having the second-highest odds to win.

NFL scouts will be paying close attention to him as he could be one of the top quarterbacks entering the 2026 NFL draft.

Last season, Garrett Nussmeier succeeded Jayden Daniels, who departed for the NFL, to be the next quarterback in Baton Rouge. He was impressive, amassing 4,052 passing yards (second-most passing yards in LSU history) and 29 touchdowns.

Brian Kelly hopes Nussmeier takes LSU to 12-team College Football Playoff field and raise his draft stock in the process.
