Scott Woodward’s tenure as LSU’s athletics director has come to an abrupt end after being reportedly fired following a fallout from his decision to fire head football coach Brian Kelly earlier this week. LSU are now liable to pay a $54 million buyout to Kelly following his dismissal.
This prompted a lot of reactions from college football and LSU fans alike on X:

“So that means coach O is coming back???”, stated a fan.
“Guy is responsible for the 2 biggest buyouts in history and nothing to show for it lol. Is anyone worse at their job than him?”, said a fan.
“Not shocking. He cost the state $54m+”, remarked a fan.
“He’s responsible for the 2 largest buyouts in cfb history lol”, commented a fan.
“Dude movin’ on down the road to bankrupt another school”, stated another fan.

“LSU fans are going to be celebrating “, remarked another fan.
While some fans did suggest that the former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron might replace Kelly, Orgeron himself has expressed a strong interest in returning to LSU as the head coach. He led LSU from 2016 to 2021, with a national championship win in 2019.
Recently, he stated on ESPN that he would love to come back and is “one phone call away” from potentially rejoining the program.

Louisiana Governor Landry Declares LSU Board Will Take Charge of Coaching Search
Before Woodward’s dismissal became official, Governor of Louisiana Jeff Landry was blunt about the Brian Kelly situation when he said that Woodward would not be the person to lead the coaching search.
“I can tell you right now, Scott Woodward is not selecting the next coach,” Landry stated.
“the Board of Supervisors is going to come up with a committee and they’re going to find us a coach”, he further elaborated.
Woodward came to LSU in 2019 with previous experience at Washington and Texas A&M. At Washington, he hired Chris Petersen away from Boise State. He was responsible for Jimbo Fisher’s hiring at Texas A&M, eventually costing them a mammoth $77 million buyout following his dismissal in November 2023.
