LSU Concerns Rise as Lane Kiffin’s 3-Hour Meeting Encourages Coaching U-Turn

Lane Kiffin’s future has been one of the main stories in college football over the last few weeks. The Ole Miss coach has been coached with almost every head coaching opening available this season. This is in the midst of Kiffin’s best season at Ole Miss, with him one Alabama defeat away from the SEC championship and already likely having qualified for the elusive College Football Playoff.

Some of these rumors looked unlikely given the prime position Kiffin is in at Oxford right now. That is, until the LSU Tigers decided to give Brian Kelly the boot. Since the head coach position has been open at Baton Rouge, it has looked more and more likely that the Rebels’ coach might jump ship. Coming into the end of the regular season, it looks like a done deal.

According to the most recent reports, Lane Kiffin holds a $90 million offer from LSU and would be almost ready to pack his bags and head down south. However, on Saturday, following a “Hotty Tody” victory over Mississippi State on Friday, the coach had a three-hour-long conversation with school administrators discussing his future at the school. The three-hour-long meeting was with Ole Miss athletic director, Keith Carter, and chancellor Glenn Boyce. However, the LSU Tigers seem to think they have an agreement with the coach to join the program.

“If he doesn’t come, we’ve been duped,” said one source with knowledge of Kiffin and LSU’s negotiations.

The length of the meeting has raised the prospect of a possible U-turn in negotiations and the coach deciding to stay. However, some at Ole Miss see his indecision as a clear sign of his desire to leave, according to reports from ESPN’s Marty Smith.

What Could Lane Kiffin Be Discussing With the Ole Miss Authorities?

Another theory is that, having decided to take on the LSU job, Kiffin is negotiating the possibility of leading the Rebels into the CFP in December. It seems that this is the biggest obstacle for the move to LSU, with Ole Miss school administrators divided as to whether or not to allow Kiffin to coach in the postseason while being committed to another program.

Obviously, the coach wishes to do so, as he has long chased the CFP while at Oxford. While he has publicly expressed his indecision about whether to remain or leave, school administrators have taken his unwillingness to sign an extension as a situation worrisome enough to start interviewing potential replacements.

According to Yahoo Sports, they have already met with Tulane’s Jon Sumrall and USF’s Alex Golesh. Golesh was heavily linked to the Arkansas Razorbacks this week.
