The LSU Tigers have fired Brian Kelly after their recent loss against Texas A&M last Saturday. They are searching for permanent replacement after the 2025 season. In the wake of this development, a former legendary LSU coach has made it known that he’s ready to return.
Ed Oregron, who led LSU from 2016-21 and captured the 2019 national championship, said publicly that if there is an opportunity he’s ready to return to coaching. During an interview Wednesday with ESPN’s “UnSportsmanLike,” Oregron said:
“I’d love to. Are you kidding me? Hey, I’m one phone call away. I just gotta get in my truck; I could be there today.”

Ed Oregron Ready To Take Assistant Role Under Potential HC Candidate Lane Kiffin
After Brian Kelly was fired last week, Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin is emerging as the top candidate to take over the program next season. Under this circumstances, Ed Oregron was asked if he would be ready to take a role of the assistant.
“Yeah, I’d consider it,” he said. “I love LSU. I still got my home in Baton Rouge. I loved when I was coaching for Coach Miles being the defensive line coach. I love the Tigers, and if I’m getting back into coaching, for sure I’d consider it. No doubt.”
Oregron also talked about Kelly’s tenure since 2022 at LSU. He found the former head coach unfit, comparing him to Pete Carroll.
“I think that’s one of the things — whether it’s true or not — the look from the outside, Brian Kelly never embraced the state of Louisiana,” he said. “When you get those guys on your side, it’s very powerful. I think getting everybody to pull in the same direction, like Pete Carroll did, like we did, one team, one heartbeat, is gonna be the key for the next coach.”
Ed Oregron had plenty of experience before joining LSU in 2015 as defensive lines coach. The following year when LSU fired head coach Les Miles following a loss to Auburn, Oregron was named the team’s interim head coach in Sept. 2016.
He led LSU in six seasons before the program and the head coach mutually decided to part ways in Oct. 2021. Ever since, Oregron has not landed another coaching job.
