Lane Kiffin’s head coaching future is one of the biggest storylines in the world of college football right now, as he is reportedly on the verge of leaving Ole Miss, which is sitting on a 10-1 record so far, which is among the best seasons the Rebels have had in years.
Kiffin is being pursued by both Florida and LSU to replace their fired head coaches, while many analysts believe he should leave for one of these programs as they are stronger in terms of history and resources, others believe he should stay there and continue building his legacy.
One of the major problems that could come with Kiffin’s potential exit from Ole Miss is that it might affect the team’s playoff chances, as the committee might not look at them the same way without their head coach.
Talking about Kiffin’s LAU-FLORIDA-Ole Miss Saga, Nick Saban said on College Game Day on Saturday:
“Everybody should be thinking about the players,” Saban said. “Players should be able to play for their coach for the entire season. Players shouldn’t be penalized if a coach leaves, because the committee has the opportunity, if a player or coach doesn’t participate, they can sink you in the rankings.”
“We should match the academic calendar with the football calendar,” said Saban, who thinks that aligning key dates would help stem the tide of coaches leaving during seasons.
“This is not a Lane Kiffin conundrum,” he concluded. “This is a college football conundrum, and we need some leadership to step up and change the rules…”
“This is not a Lane Kiffin conundrum. This is a college football conundrum that we need some leadership to step up and change the rules on how this gets done.”

Michael Irvin Expresses Frustration Amid Lane Kiffin’s Coaching Situation
Talking about the potential impact on Ole Miss’s playoff hopes if Lane Kiffin decides to jump ship, Michael Irvin said on his YouTube channel that teams like LSU and Florida shouldn’t have reached out to Kiffin in the middle of the triumphant season the Rebels were having in 2025.
Irvin said that the teams shouldn’t be able to talk to these coaches who are so highly ranked because of the effort the kids put in, and if they do end up talking, it shouldn’t become public knowledge.
“Let these kids have an opportunity to live their dream of winning a championship without hearing all this kind of stuff.” Irvin said.
The news about Kiffin’s future will be announced after the Egg Bowl game on 28th November.
