Lane Kiffin, on his latest appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, shed light on some of the private conversations he’s been having with fellow college football coaches, revealing the brutal truth of the current college football landscape as far as firing head coaches is concerned.
According to Kiffin, he’s part of a group chat with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, and a couple of other coaches, where they discuss how the margin for error in college football has disappeared.
“We have our little group chat with like Sark (Steve Sarkisian) and Kirby (Smart) and a couple of guys, and we came up with this: You lose one, you’re out of the top 10.You lose two, you’re out of the top 25. You lose three, you get fired,” Kiffin stated (0:24).
Kiffin also highlighted how CFB head coaches are trying to survive such turbulent times by focusing on one win at a time every week instead of looking too far ahead.
“So, you know, we’re focused on our job of trying to get to 1-0 every week because that’s the profession we’re in now,” he further explained (0:37).
“You lose 1 game you’re out of the top 10..
You lose 2 you’re out of the top 25..
You lose 3 you get fired..
We’re just trying to go 1-0 every week”@Lane_Kiffin #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/qWlisza4V7

This is especially pertinent considering how two of the most prominent names in college football, namely former LSU & Penn State head coaches Brian Kelly and James Franklin, were both fired after their respective programs incurred three losses each this season.
LSU parted ways with Brian Kelly back in October after a disappointing 5-3 start to their season, meanwhile, the Nittany Lions fired James Franklin, who coached the side for 12 seasons before his dismissal after a 3-3 start to the campaign.

Lane Kiffin Denies Rumored Ultimatum From Ole Miss
Initially it was reported that Ole Miss had given Kiffin an ultimatum to extend his contract with the Rebels, giving him time to clarify his future before the November 28 Egg Bowl against Mississippi State.
This reported deadline came in the backdrop of Kiffin being linked to multiple programs. However, Kiffin has denied any reports of any ultimatums or deadlines.
Meanwhile, teams like LSU and Florida are reportedly pursuing Kiffin aggressively to fill their respective coaching vacancies, with LSU even offering a $14 million contract to sign Kiffin.
Kiffin continues to lead the Ole Miss Rebels with a 10-1 overall record so far this season, with an emphatic 34-24 win over the Florida Gators last weekend.
