After leading the Ole Miss Rebels to an 11-1 record in the regular season, Lane Kiffin changed jobs, leaving Oxford, Mississippi, to take the head coach position with the LSU Tigers. While he wanted to remain as head coach of the program for the College Football Playoff, athletic director Keith Carter declined, leading to his exit from the program.’
Even though Kiffin is no longer associated with the program, he is bound to get a few more checks as his former program makes strides in the College Football Playoff.

How Is Lane Kiffin Still Making Money Off Ole Miss’ CFP Run?
On Saturday, Lane Kiffin’s former team, Ole Miss, blew out the Tulane Green Wave 41-10 to advance into the CFP quarterfinal. According to Front Office Sports, this advance will earn Kiffin a $250,000 bonus.

Actually, Kiffin will be getting his dues from the LSU Tigers, who as part of his seven-year, roughly $91 million contract, will be earning returns based on Ole Miss’ CFP performances. According to ESPN, LSU agreed to pay him any CFP bonuses he would have earned had he stayed at Ole Miss through its postseason. The bonuses were as follows:
- $150,000 for Ole Miss earning a CFP berth
- $250,000 for advancing to the CFP quarterfinals
- Up to $1 million if the Rebels were to win the national championship
Thus, Kiffin will be hoping his former program continues to make good strides in the ongoing playoff, even though they are currently coached by Pete Golding.
The deal with LSU that averages around $13 million per year made Lane Kiffin one of the highest-earning head coaches in college football. At Ole Miss, he used to earn roughly $9 million per year.
Under his current contract with LSU, his annual pay is 400,000 and bonuses tied to performance take his annual compensation to $13 million. Among those are a $3 million incentive for winning the national title and other bonuses for winning the SEC championship.
The contract with LSU is also coach-friendly. If LSU fires Kiffin without cause, they’ll owe him 80% of the remaining salary of the contract, which they’ll have to pay on a monthly basis. Meanwhile, if Kiffin leaves LSU on his own, he will trigger a buyout starting with $7 million and decreasing thereafter.
