Governor Jeff Landry Faces Ryan Clark’s Wrath Over Involvement In LSU HC Search

Former LSU Tiger Ryan Clark didn’t like Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry (R) getting involved in the school’s coaching targets debate. LSU, which recently parted ways with Brian Kelly after a fairly unsuccessful stint, is looking for a new head coach, and Governor Landry seems to have an opinion about it.

Landry recently said he wouldn’t allow the school’s recently fired athletic director, Scott Woodward, to pick the next football head coach, seemingly implying he could do a better job at the choice.

Clark seemed to think that this was not only a silly comment, but proof that politicians keep trying to involve sports in politics. When asked about it on Thursday’s edition of First Take, Clark said:

“Second most ridiculous thing he said this week. The first was standing on campus and saying he wanted to put a statue of somebody (Charlie Kirk) that doesn’t represent the people of Louisiana.”

Clark went on to list the athletic achievements of the LSU Tigers during Scott Woodward’s stint, mentioning the 2019 football national championship, the 2023 women’s basketball national championship, and the 2023 and 2025 baseball national championships.

We should add Jayden Daniels’ 2023 Heisman Trophy win to that. Say what you will about the choice of Brian Kelly, but there’s been plenty of success at Baton Rouge.

His comment also seemed to be against the Governor’s call to erect a Charlie Kirk statue at the school’s campus.

What did Governor Jeff Landry say About the LSU coach Search?

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Governor Jeff Landry told reporters that he won’t be allowing LSU’s recently fired athletic director, Scott Woodward, to pick the next LSU football head coach:

“No, I can tell you right now Scott Woodward is not selecting our next coach,” Landry told reporters during a news conference at the state capitol in Baton Rouge.

He went on to joke that maybe President Donald Trump should pick the school’s next head coach, citing his proclivity for winning as a credential for him to do so.

He then backtracked a bit, saying he wouldn’t be selecting the next coach personally, but that he would want to put in some guardrails that ensure that the future coach performs to expectations and that he has enough money to succeed. The Governor said he’s tired of rewarding failure.
