LaJohntay Wester Reveals Real Reason Behind Joining Coach Prime’s Colorado

LaJohntay Wester transferred to Colorado to prove he can thrive in a new role. Now, he's showcasing his skills for NFL scouts ahead of the draft.

The Colorado Buffaloes are best known for their two big stars in WR/CB Travis Hunter and QB Shedeur Sanders. Both players are projected to be top-five picks in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft. However, they are not the only Colorado players who are projected to be drafted. Wide receivers Jimmy Horn Jr. and LaJohntay Wester are the two other Colorado players who were invited to the NFL Combine.

LaJohntay Wester Explains Why He Left FAU To Join Colorado

LaJohntay Wester left FAU after four years with the team to transfer to Colorado this past season. While it was a good addition for Colorado, it was viewed as a puzzling move for Wester. He was leaving a team where he was the number one option to join a Colorado squad with a crowded wide receiver room. At the NFL Combine on Friday, he gave his reasons for joining the Buffaloes.

“For this moment, for this level, it’s no guarantee that I’m gonna be drafted high or be asked to come into an organization and impact the game early. I wanted to show the scouts in the league that I could be a role guy, that I could go in and be a role guy and still be productive and still be that guy.”

Wester continued, “Like I told my Dad after the season, like I found out that you don’t got to be that guy to be that guy. Clearly, I was that guy even though Travis was the man to the world. I was the guy who did a lot of dirty work when Travis was out and when Travis wasn’t able to play.

“So, it was a good feeling to just come in. I was confident from the jump, I knew what we had. Knew we had Will coming, Jimmy there, Travis of course. Know about the Travis and Shedeur connection but I mean I’m confident in my game and I knew what I bring to the table.”

In his final season at FAU, Wester had 108 receptions for 1168 yards and eight TDs. After joining a crowded wide receiver room in Colorado, he took a step back statistically in 2024, making 74 catches for 931 yards and 10 TDs.

However, he showed to scouts that he is a capable role player, which is important for someone projected to be drafted late in the draft.
