Kingsbury has done an excellent job as the OC for the Commanders in the 2024-25 season up to this point, leading the fifth-highest-scoring offense in the NFL. Much of that has to do with the strong relationship created between former LSU Tigers star quarterback Jayden Daniels and Kingsbury.
Daniels is the heavy favorite to win the NFL Rookie of the Year award, thanks in part to Kingsbury’s offensive scheme, which puts Daniels in positions to succeed.
It draws comparisons to nearly a decade ago when Kingsbury was the head coach of the Red Raiders. His quarterback was the one-and-only Patrick Mahomes.
Kingsbury’s offensive prowess was on full display in 2016; the Red Raiders led the nation in total yards per game (566.6) and passing offense (456.0) while ranking fifth in scoring offense at 43.7 points per game.

Under the guidance of Kingsbury, Mahomes finished his Texas Tech career ranked third in school history in all-time passing yards. Ahead of him? His head coach.
Kingsbury was the Red Raiders quarterback from 1999-2002, passing for 12,429 yards under head coach Mike Leach. In his senior season, he passed for over 5,000 yards while finishing second in school history with 95 career passing touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in school history.
Following his stint as head coach for his alumni, in which he finished with a 35-40 record across six seasons in Lubbock, Kingsbury was hired as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2019.
He lasted four seasons as the Cardinals head coach, posting a 28-37-1 record. His offensive acumen continued in the NFL, fielding a top-10 scoring offense in 2021.
Kingsbury reestablished his standing as an NFL head coaching candidate, having shown strong performance as the Commanders offensive coordinator. Soon, we may see the Texas Tech legend roaming the sidelines once again leading an NFL team.
