Kirk Herbstreit’s Earnings Breakdown And Work Details
When Kirk Herbstreit was with ESPN, his maximum reported annual salary was $2 million, but since joining Amazon Prime video, it has peaked to $4 million per year.
Apart from working on College GameDay, Herbstreit has previously worked for ABC Sports’ college football coverage as a commentator and analyst. With ESPN, his contributions are featured on ESPN.com and “ESPN The Magazine.” He writes for “SportsCenter” (2018–2021), “ESPN College Football” (2020), “College GameDay” (2020), and “Saturday Night Football” (2020).
Herbstreit joined ESPN’s College GameDay in 1996 and was a sideline reporter for ABC’s primetime Saturday college football games.
“Nobody knew who I was back in 1996 when I first started,” Herbstreit said. “Instead of hiding from that, I said ‘I’m going to be the hardest working analyst in sports. That became my calling card. I had to earn people’s respect. The only way I knew how to do that was through my work ethic and preparation. It’s the only way I know how.”
He regularly features on the Columbus ESPN Radio affiliate 97.1 The Fan and has also been a color commentator for NFL’s Thursday Night Football games for a long time now.
For the 2018 NFL draft, he replaced Jon Gruden after the ABC obtained the rights to broadcast the first two draft nights. In March 2022, Herbstreit jumped ships, going from ESPN to Amazon Prime Video to cover Thursday Night Football games.
“When I look back at it I think I wasn’t that three-time All-American, I wasn’t that Heisman trophy winner and instead of hiding from that, I hit it head-on because I knew fans from all over the country had no idea who I was,” Herbstreit said in another interview. “So what I did was build a name on work ethic and knowing coaches and what they were doing and calling every coach I could call. That became my thing and it’s still my thing to this day.”
His well-renowned broadcasting career has saw him being named a recipient to several awards. Herbstreit won five Sports Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Sports Personality – Studio Analyst” in 2010, 2011, and 2019 and “Outstanding Sports Personality – Sports Event Analyst” in 2018 and 2020.
