Kenny Minchey Transfer Portal: Top 5 Landing Spots for Notre Dame QB Ft. Tennessee Volunteers

It can’t get much worse for Notre Dame fans. The Irish not only missed the playoffs this week, but also have some bad news from the transfer portal. Backup QB Kenny Minchey announced he will be leaving Notre Dame through the transfer portal, according to Pete Nakos of ON3 Sports. The young QB was a four-star prospect and has two years of eligibility left.

Here are the top 5 most probable options for Minchey:

    1. Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee is easily at the top of this list. The Vols are likely losing Joey Aguilar at the end of this year and need a QB. Minchey is from Tennessee and was interested in them as a recruit. The Vols also have had success this year with transfers, and there isn’t much reason for them not to try to do it again. Tennessee has had considerable success with quarterbacks under Josh Heupel as well. If the opportunity comes, Minchey should definitely have the Vols in the mix.

    2. Louisiana State University

No matter how Lane Kiffin left, his job has already started. LSU played well below expectations, especially with its quarterbacks. Trinidad Chambliss could be moving with his coach, but for now, we can’t be sure. Minchey was able to keep CJ Carr in the QB battle; Kiffin definitely will keep him on his short list when he explores the market this year.

    3. Miami Hurricanes

The ACC familiarity comes into play here to some extent. Notre Dame plays a lot of the conference despite not being in it, so Minchey should be pretty familiar with Miami’s opponents. On the flip side, the Hurricanes will be looking to replace Carson Beck this year. Not an easy task, but a solid four-star with experience could do the trick.

    4. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Tech will be a little bit of an underdog for Minchey. Tech doesn’t have a QB that can play in 2026 right now, due to injuries. Minchey is a pocket passer, and being able to sling it is something the Red Raiders love. Not to mention, Tech was fantastic in the portal last year. A trip to Lubbock could definitely be in the cards for Minchey.

    5. Clemson Tigers

At this point, Dabo Swinney could do anything to turn Clemson around. Another year of disappointment, and his QB1 is going to the draft. Minchey, similar to Cade Klubnik, likes to fire from the pocket. The two QBs are pretty similar in how they like to operate, making it an interesting choice for Clemson.

    Bottom Line

Minchey feels like one of the more forgotten QBs who battled for positioning this year. He took CJ Carr to the beginning of the season before the Irish could figure it out. He should have plenty of attention this offseason, and with his talent, there is no telling how high his ceiling is.
