After an unbelievable second season in charge of the Arizona State Sun Devils, Kenny Dillingham has landed himself a bumper contract extension.
As the Sun Devils’ head coach continues to put Arizona State in the national conversation, what is Dillingham’s salary, contract, and net worth?
Kenny Dillingham’s Salary and Contract in 2024
Dillingham signed a new five-year contract extension on December 31, 2024, that includes several new commitments. The base salary of the new extension has not yet been disclosed.
However, under the previous deal, the ASU head coach was set to earn a base salary of $4.05 million in 2024 and will have the opportunity to earn additional bonuses. That number is expected to rise significantly.
The previous contract also included a guaranteed increase to Dillingham’s salary by $100,000 in November each year.
That base salary put Dillingham near the bottom of the Big 12. However, the new deal is expected to make him a top earner among Big 12 coaches. Due to his success in 2024, he will likely earn over $3 million in additional bonuses.
Dillingham earned an extra $200,000 for winning nine games in 2024, choosing selfishly to share the bonus among off-field staff. The Sun Devils’ head coach also earned $395,000 for winning the Big 12 Championship Game.
Furthermore, Dillingham earned a 30% salary bonus for gaining a College Football Playoff berth, which AZCentral reports will amount to over $1.1 million.
If Arizona State wins a CFP quarterfinal or semifinal, an additional 5% salary will also be earned.
An additional $1.4 million would have been paid if Arizona State had won 12 regular-season games. Dillingham will also receive $100,000 if he is named National Coach of the Year and $50,000 if he is named any other Coach of the Year.
Incentives also include off-the-field activity, with a maximum of $300,000 if the football team’s Grade Point Average (GPA) hits 3.0 and there is a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 91%. There are also academic incentives for lower GPAs and GSR.
These incentives are expected to be in Dillingham’s contract extension announced on New Year’s Eve 2024. The contract extension will see an additional 20 football scholarships available in 2025.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that the deal will see a further commitment to the staff, and the Sun Devils will become a “full participant in revenue share.” Meanwhile, 45% was added to the Sun Devils’ football operations budget, including an “ increased commitment to staff.”
Thamel reports that Dillingham’s five-year extension includes a “pathway to extend to 10 years”. However, state law prevents school contracts from being longer than five years, but the incentive-laden contract will contain wording that will likely offer further extensions.
Dillingham’s Net Worth
Under his previous contract, Dillingham had a net worth of $20.25 million. This is based on his five-year contract and base salary, which started at $3.85 million for 2023 and tops out at $4.25 million in the final year of his current deal.
That figure doesn’t include his current undisclosed salary due to his fresh contract extension, any potential athletic or academic success incentives (as listed above), or any salary Dillingham accrued at any of the stops along his coaching journey.
Finally, his net worth doesn’t include any of the employment perks Dillingham receives alongside his salary. The Arizona State HC gets expenses, sports tickets, car grants, and admission to the university golf course, amongst other extras.
