The Kansas State Wildcats made the move to promote Matt Wells, their quarterback coach, to the position of offensive coordinator this offseason. So, how does he plan to utilize veteran quarterback Avery Johnson and take this Wildcats offense to the next level?

Matt Well’s on Kansas State’s 2025 Offensive Plan
In a recent interview with insider D. Scott Fritchen, Wells chatted about the prospect of becoming the offensive coordinator in Manhattan, Kan., and his goals for the offense this upcoming season.
One of the biggest points that Wells made during the interview is that his goal as an offensive coach is to get the ball to his playmakers.
“As a young player, I learned ‘FTS: Feed The Stud’ really, really early. That’s getting the ball into the hands of your playmakers,” he explained.
It appears that he is looking to build his offense around quarterback Avery Johnson, who is coming off the best season of his college career.
How Avery Johnson Can Be Successful
As many Kansas State fans know, Johnson came to prove his doubters wrong in his sophomore season. He threw for 2,712 yards and 25 touchdowns while also rushing for 605 yards and seven touchdowns.
Still, Johnson’s completion percentage was a little low, at 58.3%. He’ll have to trust what Wells teaches him, and that includes getting the ball to his best receivers, running backs, and tight ends.
1,000-yard running back D.J. Giddens, WR1 Jayce Brown, and starting tight end Garrett Oakley are going to be key in 2025 for Johnson as he looks to take the next step in his college career.

The Wildcats have put together three seasons with at least nine wins but are looking to become more than just a formidable opponent next season. If this Wells-led offense can take it to a whole new level in a wide-open Big 12, the rest of the conference might want to look out.
