It’s not easy following a legend, especially one of Nick Saban’s caliber. But Kalen DeBoer seems up for the challenge. In his first-ever SEC Media Days session, the new Alabama head coach took the time to show his appreciation for former coach Nick Saban and honored his legacy with the Crimson Tide.
Kalen DeBoer: ‘We Appreciate Everything Coach Has Done’
The new Alabama head coach is a special head coach in his own right. In fact, the former Washington head coach will have the highest winning percentage of any FBS head coach in history if the Crimson Tide lose three or fewer games this season.
But he’s still following a legend, something that often backfires. Expectations are extremely high for the Crimson Tide, and DeBoer steps into that despite perhaps not being the University’s first choice to be Saban’s successor.
Still, DeBoer took his opportunity at SEC Media Days to highlight the accomplishments of his legendary predecessor.
“I want to congratulate Coach (Saban) on the ESPY,” DeBoer began. “Personally, on behalf of Alabama football, we appreciate everything Coach has done and the hard work and years he put into that.”
In addressing the concerns about following such a legend, DeBoer had some candid and wise words.
“I understand there is only one Coach Saban,” DeBoer said. “This program is special. I take it as a great honor to carry on the tradition. For me, coaching football is just coaching football — just try to simplify it. The alternative is to be at a place without expectations.”
DeBoer’s attempts to simply coach have served him well at his previous stops. However, there is no doubt that the University of Alabama is a few steps above Sioux Falls.
But DeBoer has found success everywhere he’s been. DeBoer has an incredible 72-1 home record, with the one loss coming during the COVID-19 season without fans in attendance while at Fresno State.
If there’s anyone who can follow the legendary Saban, it’s DeBoer.
