Kalen DeBoer Describes Alabama’s “Balancing Act” Concerning Jalen Milroe Last Season

At the SEC spring meetings on Tuesday (May 27), University of Alabama’s head football coach Kalen DeBoer spoke about how former quarterback Milroe’s prowess compelled the team to go in a different direction offensively. The change was needed, as Milroe’s athletic ability proved to be greater than most on the team, according to reporting from On3.

“With Jalen, he just had added elements to his game,” DeBoer stated. “He could throw the ball but you had to make sure you were utilizing, to benefit your team, what he could do with his legs. I think making sure you’re incorporating more offense where he can take advantage of that then forces you to figure out what you’re taking away.”

“Because there’s still only so many snaps you play in a game or a season. Who’s touching the ball? It’s going to take away from someone else and you try to figure out that balancing act.”

During thirteen games as the Crimson Tide’s quarterback, Milroe threw for 16 touchdowns and ran for another 20 touchdowns while amassing 2,844 yards passing with a 64.3% completion rating. He led the team to the College Football Playoff, where they lost to the Michigan Wolverines in the ReliaQuest Bowl 19-13.

DeBoer’s quarterback room now has three players – Ty Simpson, Keelon Russell, and Austin Mack – more in tune with what he’d like to initiate with the Crimson Tide’s offense this season. “We do have three guys that are probably more alike than different,” DeBoer said.

“Jalen was certainly different, I mean that in a positive way, with the utmost respect for what Jalen’s game is all about. He’s got some special elements when it comes to running that I’ve never been able to coach or very few have seen.”

Milroe’s impact will undoubtedly be something to watch as he is now a part of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, selected by the team in the third round. He’ll compete for the backup job behind Sam Darnold with Drew Lock.
