This offseason, Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer made a big change to his coaching staff by hiring Ryan Grubb as the new offensive coordinator.

Kalen DeBoer’s OC Ryan Grubb Attends First Alabama Practice
Grubb, who has worked closely with DeBoer for many years, had agreed to join the staff last season. However, after DeBoer was hired, Grubb became the OC for the Seattle Seahawks. After parting ways with the NFL team, he has now come back to the Crimson Tide to lead the way for the offensive line.
A video distributed by the school shows him at Alabama’s first spring practice of the 2025 season on March 3.

With Grubb now on the staff, the media questioned DeBoer about which position group the OC will give the most attention to.
“I think Coach Grubb will always still be involved with the quarterbacks,” DeBoer replied. “I’m just a strong believer that your play-caller has to be around the quarterbacks. But on your note, you’re very right, it allows him to do what you’d want a coordinator to do and that’s see every position.”
Grubb brings a lot of experience to the role, having coached both offensive line and QBs in the past. He has worked at Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, and Fresno State in the same position. Regarding this, DeBoer further said:
“He certainly has a lot of history and background with the offensive line, so I think there’s eyes that start in certain spots when you’re a coordinator, beyond just the quarterback.
“I think a lot of times his eyes, yeah, he can see it all, he can see them line up on the perimeter, but he’s also really feeling and seeing and has an intuition on what’s going on with the offensive line up front.”

Grubb is excited about the chance of working with DeBoer again, as he said in his hiring statement:
“I’m thankful to get an opportunity to work with Coach DeBoer once again and to be a part of an offensive staff that I am very familiar with. I am confident that our staff will be able to put the team in the best position to win each time out.
“I know and trust that this group of coaches and players will work tirelessly to meet the standard that has been set here at Alabama, and I can’t wait to get out on the field with them.”
As spring practice begins in Tuscaloosa, Grubb has an important role of working well with the coaching staff and the offensive line, which will be evident in Alabama’s important spring A-Day game on April 12.
